Why though?
Switch doesn't have bc and cost 100$ more than a New 3ds xl and 220$ more than a 2DS...
Nintendo France expects 700k 3ds units to be sold this year, like 2016 and 2015 and 800k switches!
Switch isn't being seemed as 3DS successor by the majority yet! Let's wait for Nintendo to kill 3DS and perhaps make a more portable, affordable and durable switch version, if it really replaces 3DS too.
For reference, 3DS sales increased in Japan in the week of switch launch and wyoy wans't much down, and the YTD in neck to neck with last year, to think, it has hit an almost utter point of saturation in Japan, i.e there is no much room from growth as in the west, 2DS release helped a lot, also remember that more and more will be upgrading to a new 3DS XL, which is still at its initial price afte two years of its presence.
It had just a huge holiday season in its 6th ( for its 6th year and alledgly being succeded in 2017 ) thanks to Pokemon go+Pokemon Sun and Moon, that caused stock problems in the west, especially in the usa, demand was higher than the amount of units that Nintendo produced! Nintendo has increased 3DS sales forecast by 1m every quarter since April ( FY16 Q1 beginning, FY16 end in March 2017), 5.2m->6.2m>7.2m, Nintendo underestimated the power of Pokemon.
3DS sold 7.7m in 2014 ( new 3ds xl in autumn in Japan ) , 7.5m in 2015 ( New 3ds xl year in the west ) and 7.4m in 2016 ( Pokemon go+ Sun and moon ) Calendar years.

But thats what it mans to cannibalize sales..... i suspect the 3DS wouldn't end up selling as well as it has in previous years because of the switch. The switch doesn'tr hav to be backward compatible for it to be seen as the next best handheld. And be rest asured its price is gonna drop this year around the time when it has a large number of games.
The simple fact is that its a hybrid. Its not a home console nor a portable, its both. Those that want a nintendo home console will get the switch, those that want the most powerful poratbble console will also get the switch. And its a better portable device (outside its battery life) than any device before it. I just don't see how it won't take sales away or staunt the sales of the 3DS.

Fat DS didn't do it to gba ( except from Japan ) , which only had the inevitable normal decline... The slim and cheaper ds lite slayed gba, mainly because, it was when Nintendo stopped supporting GBA with major games! ( like Pokemon Emerald )
Remember, Nintendo deemed ds as a third pillar not a gba successor, taking into account the sales of gba and ds in 2004-2006 before ds lite release. people believed that, in spite of obviously ds being the successor ( the bc, the price and hardware similarities ) with switch and 3ds is somewhat nebulous, ( no bc, vast price difference in both hardware and software, the very different nature of switch hardware ) .
As I have noted before, switch as it is now will be selling primarily as a wii u successor and by extend wii, gc, n64 e.tc! it's a great thing for a home console player to be able to play what he was playing on tv lying on the sofa, anywhere inside and outside the house and sovever they want.
Switch needs a significant price drop or the revision that cited above, to really succeed 3ds and of course 3DS to be killed by Nintendo as wii u was in 2016...
P.s Even if it have a price drop, people after August have bought a 3DS at 169$ ( and 199$ 3DS xl )... Not to mention, 2DS or the prices of 3DS games!
Handheld console only gamers have to wait... Home console and notably both kind of console gamers must be satisfied! The first becauseswitch cost 299$ with the perspective of dropping soon to 249$ and the second because they only have to pay 299$ for a home console and handhled console, while in 8th gen, they had to spend 500-600$.
