Back in the day it was 2D vs 3D. FF8 seems to be one that people either loved or hated. Not much inbetween. Kinda like Majora's Mask.
During FF7's hayday, all we could hear back then were the words of the media. With the rise of the internet and social media, there's a lot more vocal hate towards that game. (In comparison, I don't feel like FFX gets that much hate.)

Hearing this review makes me more curious to hear what others have to say about the game. It sounds very promising, and I'll have to find out the specifics of many details myself when playing, of course.
Though when people talk about dethroning classics, I take that with a huge grain of salt, because classics by design are often imune to contructive comparisons, depending on the person. Because it's a classic, it gets +100 to all stats.
And I don't say that because I think OOT is the best in the series. Because I don't. Not even the best on N64.
But I often hear this kind of narrative when impressions are still early. And then as months and years go by, which one is it that people are still hailing as the holy grail? Yup, the old one.
