Forums - Sales Discussion - Japan Sales- Switch Year 1 vs 3DS and Wii U

I know Nintendo overshipped for both WiiU and 3ds and Switch selling out, but I still think Ninteno should have had a 3m shipment ready.
That's still 1m under what they shipped for 3DS at a slightly more expensive pricepoint and I think the demand is there.

3DS didnt ship 4 million, that was the goal but the missed it

It sold through 3.61 million of a four million goal as far as I know. Sorry if I got that wrong.

thats not sell through, thats shipped and it was also very overshipped.

3.61 million was shipped at the end of March 2011 but global sell through was only about 50% and the following quarter to this day is still the lowest quarterly shipment 3DS has ever had.

They didnt sell through the 3.61m until mid-August.

edit: a similar thing happened for Wii U, Nintendo had forcasted 5.5 million shipped by the end of March 2013. They later adjusted it down to 4 million and still were only able to ship 3.45 million which didnt get sold through until September.

Ah, ok. not sure where I got the idea, then. Thanks for clarifying!

Let's see how the charts will look like in a couple of weeks. Right now, Switch is supply limited while Wii U and 3DS weren't. By then the Wii U at least should have dropped quite a bit and we will see if the Hype is here to stay or just temporary.

Will you also make a WW comparison or just one for Japan?

Bit sad that no one made a comparison for the other consoles this year, and I don't have the time to make them myself

Wow cannot believe I didn't see that thread. Will be cool to follow Switch's progression^^

I think/hope there is still demand for a while yet with plenty of people still looking for a Switch. How much stock is enough.

The other day I was in my local Tesco uk supermarket just after launch and there was 2 Switch games at the bottom of a shelf barely viewable about 1 foot from the floor in a recessed shelf and that was it. It's not just consumer apathy to worry about but retail apathy too. Just Zelda and 1-2 switch I think and that was it.

Of all the major markets, the UK is the least receptive towards Nintendo so retailer apathy there will likely be much higher than America, Japan, France, Germany, Australia, etc.

Only Japan, the others don't get numbers as reliably nor do I have the data for wii u and 3ds for other regions.
