Forums - Sales Discussion - Nintendo 3DS will surpass 70M LT

70 millions while a great number it will still be Nintendo's less sold handheld right?

75m is still on the cards. 70m is basically a certainty if they don't discontinue it right away (which they probably won't). The PSP and GBA (80-82) is probably out of reach though.

Right! Very close to PSP numbers!

When do you think it will be discontinued? I think 2018

I could see them doing it as early as 2017, if their worried about it effecting the sales of the switch.

For the low price it is a nice system to have.

I think so too but I don't see it beating the PSP. A bridge too far.

Probably. The line between success and failure is going to be kind of hard to figure for the Switch, though. Assuming no 3DS successor, it will have to cover sales for both handhelds and home consoles. Even then, the baseline for the Switch is not simply Wii U + 3DS, as most people who owned both of those systems are unlikely to buy two Switch consoles. That's why Nintendo is trying to hard to attract new consumers.

I think Nintendo is looking to generate more revenue from accessories, too. I anticipate a horde of themed Joy Cons and holders.

Ultimately, they'll need to find a way to sell a LOT of software to Switch owners. The attach rate is going to need to be really high to equal handheld + home console software numbers.

So the cheapest Nintendo product on the market is going to be $300? OK.

The fact that the 3DS has been out of stock at every major retailer for the past 3 months doesn't concern any of you guys? Maybe I'm crazy, but it seems like Nintendo is slowly and quietly trying to kill it off, as to make way for the Switch or maybe the 3DS successor. At this rate, I think it would be very lucky to hit 70 million. I would say it's headed for discontinuation at the end of 2017.

P.S. Also, I know they've officially said otherwise, but it just seems odd that they've been sold out for this long.

It'll be awhile before I figure out how to do one of these. :P

I'm seeing number closer to n64. I hope that switch do as well to no be considered a faliuare, but at the same time stays low enough to push nintendo to try something to push it to greatness(like slice the price soon rather than later).

"Hardware design isn’t about making the most powerful thing you can.
Today most hardware design is left to other companies, but when you make hardware without taking into account the needs of the eventual software developers, you end up with bloated hardware full of pointless excess. From the outset one must consider design from both a hardware and software perspective."
