Yeah I gather from the DF tech analysis that water and interactions with the vegetation were probably nessecary sacrifices to maintain the framerate. This is real coding to the metal optimization, to the point where they're balancing all the systems to acheive the most impact on screen with a solid framerate. Coupled with some of the unique advanced rendering systems in place (that are likely to be implemented by other developers in the future) as it stands the decima engine has to be one of the best.
There's so many elements that I personally find impressive, but it's the fact that the detail is so high, and then on top of that it just has incredible draw distances. I can't get over that.
