Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Opinion: Microsoft Positioning Scorpio As 'Next Gen' Console

I wouldn't be surprised if it is an up-gradable entertainment box with gaming capabilities.

I knew it and said so on these forums months ago. This is their next generation console. It's going to be backwards compatible.

And do you think they will go against what they have said many times and that it won't be getting exclusives.

I don't think it will even be getting VR games right now, little alone exclusives.

I could. I don't think it will but, you never know. It wouldn't surprise me.

I think they are messing up the message. Sony was pretty clear in positioning the Pro as a premium PS4 and not as a replacement. They went as far as saying that if you don't have a 4K TV, it won't do much for you. They clearly don't want people to think that the PS4 is being replaced.

MS is indeed making people think X1 is done and Scorpio is a next gen device. This can infuriate X1 owner that may think their console is being replaced. Sony was pretty clear that PS4 Pro wouldn't have exclusives and even VR would work on both models. MS is being less clear and people will get worried specially because the gap between Scorpio and the normal X1 is much bigger than with PS4 and Pro.

I'm pretty sure it's just a bad marketing team being stupid. If they are indeed trying to do a soft-launch of a next-gen, then they will end up Dreamcasting themselves. But I see a 95% chance that it's exactly a PS4 Pro, just more powerful.

@Xbox @XboxP3 Will future Xbox's have backwards compatibility by default? Like with PCs and Direct X? I'd buy an Xbox every 4 years that way

@Andrew_Gilletti It's challenging to predict the future but for me compatibility is a feature we should preserve as long as possible.

Phil Spencer said something almost identical about the Scorpio, but that was later denounced, definitely messing up the message.

Phil Spencer - "Scorpio is not going to do anything for you. Scorpio is designed as a 4K console, and if you don't have a 4K TV, the benefit we've designed for, you're not going to see. Clearly, you can buy Scorpio, and if and when you decide you want to buy a 4K television to take advantage of the increased performance, obviously the console will be ready for you."

I really think that this is the real message. It's just what the Pro does for the PS4. But they seem interested in making Scorpio look much better than the Pro, even if it starts looking like they will fade-out the X1 (which they won't).
