Reggie: Switch matchmaking and lobbies handled through phone app

"The smart phone app that we’re creating, that will be part of our online service, we believe is going to be a very compelling part of the overall proposition because that’s how you’ll voice chat, that’s how you’ll do your matchmaking, and create your lobby. We also think it’s a very elegant solution because if you’ve taken your switch on the go, you’ve put yourself in a hotspot, you’re looking at get a quick match of Mario Kart in, to whip out some sort of bulky, gamer headset is a bit of a challenge.

So we think we’ve got an elegant solution. That’s a very specific answer to your question."  - Reggie.

"The important takeaway from this interview is the apparent fact that all of your typical online interactions will be facilitated by the application." -
Jessey Nettey

Thoughts?

What about windows phone users? Not android or apple.... is there also a windows phone app?

What about kids, where mom and dad want to give them a console.... no online play for them? unless mom & dad get them a phone with online too?

So voice chat, matchmakeing, lobbies are all on the phone... nothing online might be done by the Switch itself.

Am I the only one that finds this weird?

I think it's anything but elegant. Forcing you to use extra hardware to make possible that function is, at the very least, annoying.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Come join The 2018 Obscure Game Monthly Review Thread.

I will say what I did in the other thread. I don't own a Smartphone or tablet so this is bullshit on Nintendo's part. Seriously bullshit.

I thought the phone was just for voice chat.

Colour me surprised.... without a nintendo app for your phone, you wont be able to play any games online.

Its just so.... weird that its not done console side like the PS4/XB1.

Will the app be free? I hope their paid online service isnt more than $10 a year

I will never use that, so I would have to basically pay for just playing online like on the WiiU...

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

So I get to pay for free NES and SNES games.....wait!

if this app allows the Switch to connect through the phone's internet, then it's a genius way of letting people know that they can get online even outside, without having a 3G function on the console itself, which would cost money and battery-wise

do you need the app to get online? what about when you are at home? if yes then it's kinda stupid not to have the app on the system itself...

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^
