Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Switch - Go portable mode

I was really hoping that Nintendo was going to remedy the storage problem by having something like a "portable playlist" feature, where you can organize games into a playlist that essentially relegates certain games and all their content to portable memory.

I didn't know if such a thing was technologically possible, but I was hoping Nintendo wouldn't set their digital storage back with the Switch. Unfortunately, looks like they will. According to rumors this was not due to a potential system crashing but because external storage would make Switch look less portable and clash with marketing messaging. So hopefully, external storage isn't impossible for Switch.

Either way, SD card storage does grow every few years, and become cheaper. There are 256GB micro SD cards out right now that will be affordable in a year or two. So storage could be rectified in time through simple tech progression. Doesn't help anyone right now, though. I've heard the theoretical limit of regular SD cards is 2 terabytes. If that's possible in MicroSD, it will be enough.

Hmm,

I'd imagined all game saves and other system files go to the switch console and micro sd card.

Maybe an external hard drive acts as a backup only and you can't run games directly from it but to actually prevent their use seems unlikely.

I personally don't think it conflicts with the Switch concept at all and if Nintendo prevent backups so people literally run out of space and can't move games to and from an external hard drive I think that will be massively inconvenient. However saying that I guess 32GB plus 128GB gives you 160GB and Switch games will be much smaller than PS4 and xbone full games.

I'll still hope for a decent feature built in that enables movement of games from different storage devices and guess there will be one going between system memory and micro sd so adding a usb stick or external hard drive to that function is not a huge difference. Nintendo will want to sell downloaded games in preference to cartridges because of higher profit.

One of the major drawbacks of having a "jack of all trades" system. Having external HDD support is going to cause more problems than it solves. Expect all games to be small or the only other option, you will need a micro SD card for every couple of games. Talking download games here.

I believe the game card was rumoured to be 16GB as a standard, so the vast majority of games will be under 16. Looking at the file sizes of Wii U games, they're typically closer to half of that (and I think the file sizes are bloated). So, realistically thinking, when compared to Wii U, a 64GB SD card could hold from five to ten "full" games.

one of the many many questions i have.

i mean my iPhone is 256GB so i don't see how the switch won't have the same in Flash or SSD on board. i feel like nintendo are going to go the way of.. The entry is 32GB.

its a hard one.. especially with external HDD.. There is no way to move that content that fat from HDD to SSD/Flash.
its confirmed to be USB-C isn't it?

It doesnt make sense to compare the storage capacity of a device rumored to be $250 vs a device that is $800.

They've already reported it won't support external HDDs.

This is why it support SD cards of any size, similar to 3DS.

no... but the switch needs that storage more then an iphone.. im not comapring in a bad way, just stating that it will be interesting to see what nintendo thinks will be a resonable storage

Actually Laura and Emily reported there will not be external or external HDD support for Switch because problems you mentioned, having external or external HDD support for Switch wouldn't be practical and it would be complicated in any way, for now it seems it will have support only for Micro SD for storage.

If they've reported so it is true.

ok, i get what your saying now.

But i would say an iphone needs storage more since digital is the only option and you cant increase storage whereas Switch accepts physical media and allows you to increase the storage.

He's saying the comparison isn't really an even one given the type of devices they are, iPhone has that storage because it's a 800 quid device and that amount of storage must contribute to about 100 quid or so to that price. That's unrealistic to expect in the Switch unless you're expecting a 300 quid plus platform.

do you think? does the Switch take Memory Cards to expant storage?

i have always foudnd with the PS3/4 that Storage can be a big pain with the file size of games
