Forums - Sales Discussion - Shuhei Yoshida: PS4 Pro and PSVR Sales are exceeding expectations

I didn't say otherwise, just passing on the information in the article. As I said, Shuhei Yoshida didn't even say it was "exceeding expectations". Word for word he said "Well, it's selling out pretty much everywhere." And you are right. There's not much to make of that. It's pretty much just a small factual statement, and we can't gauge demand or numbers from that at all, and it's hard to day anything positive or negative. I think it's pretty natural that Sony haven't been shouting their expectations over the rooftops for a brand new product like this where they don't know fully what to expect.

if both are selling out it means sales are exceeding exceptations otherwise there would be more stock

What if they expected it to sell out?

Or maybe they restricted supply themselves, because they didn't want any risk of overshipping. Just because they ate expecting it to sell that much doesn't mean they are absolutely sure, so it's better to be safe than sorry.

Eh, not really they'd sell soon eough even if not this quickly. Just ship less later. I'm not sure how they'd end up being sorry.

Like I said, with a new product launch, especially something like this that is a relatively new type of device, there will always be an inherent risk when you launch, so you might intentionally restrain supplies to make sure there's zero possibility of them just collecting dust in store shelves. Could also be that they expect a majority of PSVR's sales to be frontloaded, so it doesn't make sense for them to build up production capacity, only to have to reduce it in a few months once initial demand has been covered. Or they are pulling a Wii and intentionally restricting supply to make the product seem more elusive, leading to higher demand in the coming months. Either way, selling out doesn't mean that it's necessarily exceeding expectations, though it does mean that it is at least so far reaching their expectations.

Why should they cut production porpoisley for systems which they make zero profits with the units themselves?

No numbers means bad numbers.

No numbers in an interview is not the same than no numbers in a financial report.

We haven't even got Vita LT sales yet.........

Of course but you can expect numbers if they are great. Sony just released concrete numbers outside of a financial report phase because there was something amazing to tell for PR.

there was blackfriday and hollidays it was not just random, they give numbers for every quartel report unlike microsoft thats the difference

It is random as if numbers would not have been great, we would not have gotten numbers.
