FF still as popular as ever it seems. The western press disenfranchised with J-games can't hold it down. ;) Can't wait to see what the Media Create numbers look like.

You mean the same press that has been mostly very positive about the game, a very significant number calling it a return to form?  That practically worships Hideo Kojima?  That gave Bayo 2 enormous praise and awards?  Please, the anti-Japanese conspiracy theory is pure bull crap 99% of the time.

Not every outlet likes them. You can hear it in dog whistles when they use terms like "archiac" or "old fashioned" to describe any of the mechanics in J-made games that aren't created by Nintendo. The generation that grew up on Xbox could care less about them. You can see it in the numbers. I want games like this and Persona 5 and TLG to get the attention they used to in a triple A market. A good game is a good game, no matter where it's made.

Or maybe Japanese devs have been struggling to keep up with the industry, leading to many of their games feeling old-fashioned and archaic, which again leads to a decline in sales? You think the media just decided "we don't like Japanese games any more lulz"? No...

I don't think that Japanese games had a decline in sales. Its just that Western games are more popular than ever.

Non-Nintendo 1st party games absolutely have had a decline in sales.

Metal Gear, Final Fantasy and Resident Evil seems to be doing pretty well, not in decline. I think that Resident Evil 6 would have outsold the 4 if it wasn't ported to every single toaster in the planet.

Street Fighter, despite the flop this gen, did very well last gen. But this has more to do with Capcom's mistakes than with the market. Why would someone purchase a broken game on launch ?

Which Japanese franchises declined in recent years ?

Final Fantasy has absolutely declined lol, Gran Turismo has declined, Resident Evil 5 did pretty well but Resident Evil 6 fell massively after that, Sonic has fallen to irrelevance because it sucks, Onimusha has dissappeared, Pro Evo Soccer has went from being a legitimate competitor to Fifa to basically nothing, Tekken has declined a lot from its peak and ugh.... Mega Man. Sure, there are some exceptions, like Souls Games, and as you say, Metal Gear Solid V performed in the realms of its predecessors (but not good enough for Konami to keep on making AAA games apparently).

0.75 M is the best case scenario. ( Edit: not including the PS4 limited bundle ) FF is on a big decline in Japan. But looking at the shipment numbers. It seems to be bigger than ever elsewhere.

Japanese games have their tropes and mechanics that are pretty much here to stay. Who decided Japanese gaming was stale and western gaming was all that mattered? Both can tend to get in a rut. It's gotten to the point where anything from Japan is instantly considered niche for some people no matter how polished it is. If you've been gaming as long as I have, you saw the rise in the disdain right about the 360 era. For some reason, Nintendo was immune to this.

I mostly play western games now, but I love what Japanese games added to the industry. That's why I have a PS4 now to have the best of both worlds.
