Forums - General Discussion - I really don't like the new South Park episodes

I'm a big South Park fan. I can rewatch the older seasons unlimited without being bored. But there seems to be something off with the newest season. And I excluded the possibility that I ate too much member berries. The newest season is just not funny at all. There is too much focus on story. Every single episode and every moment is about this conspiracy and I think it takes away room for jokes and humor. Season 19 had a continuous story too, but it wasn't obsessed with telling the story. There were still episodes focused on random subjects, like how asians determine who's gay, bodyshaming or the building of Sodosopa. But now it is only storystorystory and I don't think this is what makes South Park such a great TV show. I wanted to know if others share my opinion on this because the internet seems overwhelmingly positive while I didn't LOL one single time during season 20.

I have been enjoying the last season, some of the most intelligent points and insight into the whole election situation have subtly coming from South Park, it gets a very good message across that is overlooked by almost everyone.

But yeah I agree with you that I'd like it to go back to doing random things. It's basically been one big continuous episode. Not as strong as previous seasons, still enjoyable though.

South Park Fractured But Whole will probably be a better season of South Park than Season 20.

I've been absolutely loving it. The election coverage has been incredibly funny, the trolling has been pretty funny, and I enjoy the whole boys vs girls, dicks out, new national anthem etc.

As for the member berries? Probably my least favorite part.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

I thought the same when the series changed style around 2004.

I'll still always like the first two seasons, and the movie the most. They were funnier and less serious. And they had chef.

The new style of South Park has grown on me though.

I LOVE ICELAND!

I honestly think the first couple of seasons were very weak. I think southpark was it's best around season 10/11 with episodes like: Go God Go, Make Love Not Warcraft, Imagination Land & Guitar Queero.

I somewhat agree. I found a lot of the jokes hilarious, but I sure do miss the old format. Episodes used to be funnier when the show was less focused on one story.

'Member berries and Trump were hilarious. Cartman being silly with his gf and whispering to each other was by far my favorite part.

The wow episodes wre funny, but I think the older episodes had a very different kind of charm that has been lost.

They were about kids doing kid things. And it worked.

I think some of the jokes drag. The entire Troll subplot could've been just 1 episode. I dont like Garrison being Trump, it would've been better to have an actual character parody of Trump and I dunno, Caitlyn Jenner is last season's joke, why keep using it? Im not disliking the season, I just think its weak sauce compared to the last one.

20 years running, have to try new ideas or will get stale. South Park's attempts, whether they succeed or fail, are more admirable to me than Simpsons feeling like been going through the motions for over a decade now.

I just finished my binge watch of the entire series, and I gotta agree with you. There is way, way too much focus on continuing the story. None of the episodes this season can really stand on their own, and I don't find them nearly as funny as past episodes. I liked what they did with Season 18 the most, where there is continuity between episodes, but every episode stands on its own. Like you said, 19 kinda did this too, but I think there was still a bit too much focus on the story there, but certainly less than this season.
