Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The late and not so great...

With some exceptions, disparaging the recently diseased is always a crappy thing to do.

But another thing that's really crappy about this is that Pachter is completely ignoring all the great things Iwata accomplished during his time running Nintendo.

Iwata turned around Nintendo's console division, going from third place and 22 million sold to first place and over 100 million sold in the space of a single generation. Under him, Nintendo released the best selling console in Nintendo's history in the DS, which came less than a million short of overtaking the PS2 and becoming the best selling dedicated gaming system ever. 3DS got off to a rocky start, but he took the necessary actions to turn the system around and make it a success, AND took a pay cut.

The only failure under his belt is the Wii U. It sucks that Nintendo lost all the ground they gained with the Wii and then some, but that doesn't negate all the successes Nintendo had under him, not by a long shot.

I mean, let's not forget that the last console Nintendo released before him, the Gamecube, wasn't exactly a success either. Before the Wii, Nintendo's marketshare and console sales had been declining every single generation since the NES. Then the Wii sold more than both the SNES and N64 combined.

The man was a visionary who made his company billions of dollars. He brought gaming back to it's arcade roots and reintroduced it to the masses in a way it hasn't enjoyed since the days of Pac-Man.

The Wii U was a flawed, odd move that was antithesis to Iwata's blue ocean vision, which didn't really make sense as a successor to the Wii. That and his inability to see smartphones coming as viable gaming platforms (at let's face it, many of us laughed at that notion) were really his only mistakes. There are plenty of other more notable tech visionaries who made bigger mistakes, though.

So yeah, not only is Pachter being a boob, he's also just showing how ignorant he is of the industry is purports to analyze, and he demonstrates why he should never be taken seriously, even if he is correct every now and then. While I haven't taken the man seriously in years, I always did have a modicum of respect for him, if only for his capacity to rile up Nintendo fanboys. But with this, he has lost even that from me, as he should from everyone else regardless of console allegiance.

I have no problem with criticism as long as it backs it up and doesn't aim to take shots at someone or something. However, this particular statement rubs me the wrong way. I get that Pachter doesn't like Nintendo's strategy in terms with mobile. Nevertheless, he could've said something that didn't sound like he's taking a shot at Iwata. Iwata's accomplishments both as a designer and as a president of both HAL and Nintendo cannot be swept under the rug or undermined. Despite his failure with the Wii U (and to some extent the initial launch of the 3DS), Iwata was able to bring in new audiences into gaming, which is never a bad thing. His current strategy that is being under Kimishima's watch so the ultimate results are yet to be determined.

That's your opinion, but it's not exactly universal truth. You must respect that somebody might have a different opinion, that Iwata was a poor leader (CEO) of Nintendo.

I did not intend to make it as a universal truth. I can respect those who may not feel that way. Even if it was my opinion, there is some truth as people like seniors, adults who never grew up with games, etc., have notably bought the Wii and DS systems. Why did Wii Sports Resort, NSMBWii, Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii, Brain Age, Nintendogs, etc. sold as well as they did? Senior homes, alone, have utilized the Wii. Yes, it does not apply to everything, but it was able to establish that new audience. If others don't think highly of that, that's fine.

That was beautiful.

People read too much into his words just to find errors and put blame.

He called PC gamers racist not too long ago...

I don't know what to honestly say for those who truly believe that everyone is out to get the guy who makes himself look like a total dick towards others. I get that whole "lets look at it from the other side" kind of excuse, but I tried that and he still looks exactly the same, an asshole thorugh and through.

PC gamers seem to be cool with that. I haven't heard much debating over that.

I wouldn't say as a whole, I mean you don't really speak for me and I've seen others pointing out how idiotic it was for Patcher to say such a thing, let alone what he said not making any sort of sense.

Well, now that some time has passed... I regret that last comment. That was ugly. Enough VGC for today.

Ugh, I just looked up that interview. Pachter really is a piece of crap.

There was nothing wrong with what you said, it's just that I disagree with him talking of PC gamers in such a way as well as his point making no sense. Users like Rags managed to point this out (without an angered tone or anything).

He's the kind of guy I can never take seriously these days. No matter what shape he takes in the future, going as far as to calling a group of gamers "racist" when it doesn't fit or have a point within itself is just plain stupid to make the way he did. I expect that level from trolls, but not someone like him, though now he has gone there and bought the t-shirt, I can now expect such from him in the future .

Pachter is trash. He's the glorified armchair quarterback of the gaming industry, and his comments on Iwata are stupid. Even if you don't like his reign as a businessman during the Wii U era, Iwata's still the man responsible for saving HAL Laboratories from bankruptcy, Pokemon becoming a global success, the real muscle behind Super Smash Bros creation, and the man who lead Nintendo to the ungodly success of the Wii/DS Era after inheriting the GameCube disaster.

Also, while secretly fighting a losing battle with cancer, he laid the foundation for Nintendo's future success by restructuring the company, introducing mobile games, IP licensing and expansion initiatives, and settingup gaming's greatest mystery in the NX.

The TrashPachter will never be as great or influential a businessman, or human being, as Iwata was, and it burns his @$$ to no end.

Gaming content for gamers, by gamers. It's just common sense.

I'm not going to even bother watching the video, though I originally assumed this was done for the clicks.. but I'll leave this here:
