Forums - PC Discussion - PSA : SSD users, if you don't use hibernation, reclaim your SSD space by using this command

Hey guys,

If you already know this, awesome. I find that many don't, however, and this is a great thing to know especially if you have an SSD as your boot drive for windows.

If you have 16GB of Ram, you have a 16GB hibernation file hidden by default on your OS drive taking up space. If you never use hibernation, then this space is being used for nothing. TAKE IT BACK :) 4GB RAM = 4GB space wasted, 128GB RAM = 128GB space wasted, etc.

This works on Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 (all versions).

Hit the windows key, type cmd, and right click the cmd icon that appears in the menu and select 'run as administrator'. If your particular windows setup does not produce this option in the list, do a quick google search for 'how to run an elevated command prompt' or 'how to run command prompt as administrator'.

Once you have a command prompt open, type the following command exactly, and hit enter :

powercfg -h off

That's it. Close the command prompt window, and boom, done. You don't even have to reboot, it's already gone.

Even if your not a SSD user, you should use that command, imo. hibernation is meh, turn it off instead.

I also think you should get 8-16gb ram, and turn off the page file.

I'm in a position where I have too much SSD space but only 32 gigs of RAM. Is there a way to increase the size of my file?

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Is this a troll lol. Hibernation is nearly useless, and a larger one wouldn't do it any better haha.

Delete System 32. It has tons of processes that are just resource hogs. Most aren't really important anyway

It only takes as much space as it needs to serve the funktion, anymore wouldnt give any benefit.

And the benefit of hibernation as it is, isnt even worth the use of it (imo).

If you mean your page file? then yes there is.

system properties -> advanced tab -> performance settings -> virtual memory pool "change button".

Set it to whatever you want.

Not sure if I'm using sleep or hibernate but I have to use one or the other because it's the only way to turn my PC back on with the remote. Don't think you can do it when the system is completely off but then again I've never really tried researching that I just assumed.

Is this file used when I use sleep mode? I use sleep mode all the time.

No, this has nothing to do with sleep mode. Sleep puts the system in a low power state.

What is the difference between hibernation and sleep? I don't leave my PC running when I'm not using it. I even have sleep mode disabled.  I know I could easily look it up but perhaps others that visit this thread don't know the difference either.
