When i say conventional, I mean a dedicated home console unlike the rumors we have been hearing about the NX. To me it seems like Nintendo have no interest in competing with Sony and MS in terms of hardware specs, obtaining major third party AAA titles/exclusives/marketing rights and jumping on the latest hardware innovations such as 4k gaming etc. I think the Wii U was the last major attempt for Nintendo in terms of a conventional home console in that it was quite powerful for a Nintendo console(especially compared to the original Wii) and that it did not completely focus on a gimmick. The Wii U included HDMI output and produced great visuals. It was more like the Gamecube part II.
I personally think that from here on in, Nintendo will try and distinquish themselves from Sony/MS and produce consoles that are in their own niche. I don't think we will see another situation like the 6th generation era where it was Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube all being quite similar. It seems the Gamecube's relative failure in terms of sales had extinguished Nintendo's desire to produce a visual powerhouse console with innovations such as mode 7 in the SNES or edge-anti aliasing on the Nintendo 64.
What do you guys think?
