Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why no modular controller from the big three?

Several years ago, I came across a modular controller that looked kind of like this one:

On both sides it had a removable attachtment (you see only one here, where the d-pad and left analogue stick is attached). I ould turn these attachments around, giving me the possibility to have an asymmetrical controller for shooters, or move both analogue sticks to the bottom when I was playing fighting games or 2D platformers while I had the analogue sticks at the top when I played 3D platformers.

why don´t we see a modular controller like this from one of Sony, MS or Nintendo?? I absolutely loved it as a concept, but it had crappy build quality (especially the d-pad) but became my only controller while I gamed on PC.

So, do you see any potential drawbacks with this type of controller? Do you see other benefits with having the possibility of attachments to the controller?

You can see how it works here:

Because the DS4 is already perfect.

I have never liked the Playstation controllers, mainly because having both of the analogue sticks at the bottom is crappy for me when it comes to fps games and some other 3D games. I like the Nintendo controller very much but it, on the other hand, is not ideal for fighters.

I have a Saitek PC/PS3 controller like that. Interesting idea but the controller itself sucks and the d-pad is worthless. I don't know if the modular nature has anything to do with that or not but I'd need to read some reviews before I bought another.

I was actually planning on making a thread asking what everyone uses on PC because this thing works with almost nothing and the software in unintelligible so I plan to replace it; I just don't know with what.

The WiiU ergonomic is terrible though. Thumbs rest nicely on the DS4's sticks. The curves are so comfy and it has a great texture as opposed to a smooth glossy feel.

on topic:
i had the same controller and the controller sucked. the buildquality was really not that great
you can get a modular controller form microsoft with the elite one
scuf is also doing some stuff

Hey there. This is the third controller thread I've seen today. Controllers must be a hot topic right now. The ultimate controller ever made was the Game Cube controller. You do realize it was out before the first X Box controller and had the offset stick configuration. MicroSoft stole the offset stick setup from Nintendo.
Having a swappable component OEM controller is a cool idea, but it would not be a pack in controller. It would be an elite OEM that would sell separately.

Hey! They got SONY on my amiibo! Wait a minute. Two great gaming tastes that game great together!

Oh.... guess it doesn't count that nintendo stole the offset stick thing from the dreamcast. And that the xbox controller was really nothing but i direct steal and modification of the dreamcast controller.

On topic, the swap controller is one of those things that i have really wondered why they never happened. Seems like such a no brainer that its almost stupid to me how its nevee been done. Sell a controller, then allow people swap where things go. Take it a step further and allw them swap faceplates, backplates, battery types, button types, stick types..... if you see it you can swap it. So doimg would have created a market in of itself

Glad to see you agree with me. I don't know how to tell you this, but the Dreamcast controller only had ONE STICK.
