Forums - Sony Discussion - (Rumor) Sony Had No Option But To Release A PSNeo

As other people pointed out, this seems weird, because I suppose that AMD and Sony have some sort of contract, that AMD will produce the chips Sony needs for a period of time and for a specific price. And seeing the success of the PS4, I dont think that contract must have expired already.I dont know, seems fishy

Edit:Not to mention that the PS4 must be making a fortune for AMD.So why the hell would they risk losing a mine of gold by forcing Sony to phase out the cheap model and make them produce a more expensive PS4, risking losing Sony in the process?I say this rumor is false.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

So will original ps4 be phased out?

Smells like bullshit.

That would be the implication, guess we will see by September!

If not that they had no option, it just ended up being more cost effective going with the upgraded specs then trying to rework the original sky.

If there is any truth in this rumour I'd say this is the more likely reason.

The PS5 Exists.

This doesn't make sense. There is always a choice. And there is no business sense to the premise. After all, if Sony makes the rumored console, at the rumored price, they would always be making less money then cutting the current model to 299. It is hard to imagine a scenario where a 399 neo is more profitable than a 299 PS4.

The only thing I can think of is if either Neo is at least 450 or if they can gett the cost of production down substantially (using magic).

In fact now that I think about it, the premise of yhis article makes me doubt that the Neo is even real.

Also the idea that AMD would abandon production of their fastest selling console semiconductor is asinine.

If AMD doesn't wan't to make the chip anymore and do not have a contract holding them to it, they can certainly do that. The chip may have sold very well but it is outdated and unsuitable for a fast moving market.

The way the cost reduction works is due to economies of  scale, this is the economic theory that the larger your production capacity for one item, the cheaper it becomes to produce per item. If they kept just one production line open for the old chips, they would need different equipment, different equipment and different techniques as well as people trained for that process.... that adds up to huge costs. It is better to have a streamlined process, all the same.

Again this theory is flawed unless the Xbox One was forced to be upgraded as well.   The chips us nearly identical processes. Why would this only apply to the PS4?  At best, this would only indicate that a new slim model for both would be necessary. on a 20 or 14 nn process.  It in no way forces them to upgrade to Zen.   Also, I really have a hard time believing that Microsoft and Sony would willining accept a contract that expired after less than 3 years forcing them to invest again in R&D on a completely new console.  Thats like saying that AMD is holding the console market ransom.  I just don't believe it.

If that is the case, XB1 would also be affected. The latest rumors seem to suggest that XB1 is only getting a Slim version this year though.

While I don't really believe the rumour, the XBO could easily have a Slim without a die shrink. The console is much bigger than a PS4, even though it has a smaller chipset and and external PSU. Infact the volume of an XBO is 60% bigger than the volume of a PS4.
