If AMD doesn't wan't to make the chip anymore and do not have a contract holding them to it, they can certainly do that. The chip may have sold very well but it is outdated and unsuitable for a fast moving market. The way the cost reduction works is due to economies of scale, this is the economic theory that the larger your production capacity for one item, the cheaper it becomes to produce per item. If they kept just one production line open for the old chips, they would need different equipment, different equipment and different techniques as well as people trained for that process.... that adds up to huge costs. It is better to have a streamlined process, all the same. |
Again this theory is flawed unless the Xbox One was forced to be upgraded as well. The chips us nearly identical processes. Why would this only apply to the PS4? At best, this would only indicate that a new slim model for both would be necessary. on a 20 or 14 nn process. It in no way forces them to upgrade to Zen. Also, I really have a hard time believing that Microsoft and Sony would willining accept a contract that expired after less than 3 years forcing them to invest again in R&D on a completely new console. Thats like saying that AMD is holding the console market ransom. I just don't believe it.
