Forums - Movies & TV - Dr. Strange writer talks about the "Ancient One" controversial casting.

According to him this particular character is in a "no-win" scenario no only due to his enicity but also political complexities between Tibet and China. Seems like the studio doesn't want to send anything that could resemble a political "statement". Due to this, the creators decided to focus on getting a great actress instead of trying to win an unwinnable battle.  He makes a lot of really good arguments and gives a lot of insight in Marvel's movie making proccess from the point of view of a writer.

Double Toasted! My favorite site (besides this one). Been following those guys since before The Dark Knight released (when they were Spill.com) I listen to their shows everyday on the way to and from work. Love them!

I liked them when they were spill.com. Then they became racist POS with doubletoasted.

Anyway, Marvel is happy to send political statements in whatever state the LBGT laws are making controversy but not to China?

In case, no one else wants to watch the most of the vid, @ 17:55 in the vid, the ancient one topic is brought up.

He explains it pretty well but I disagree with changing the sex of that character.

He mentioned having a strong female character as a reason, but Marvel already has plenty of overpowered female characters. Thats quite an oversight for a person that seemed to be proud of his comic book knowledge. Even more so, considering that theres already a female in the Marvel universe who shares similar abilities with Dr. Strange and may, arguably and highly questionably, even match him in power. Too bad Age of Ultron toned her powers(and boobs) down.

I think they're gonna ruin the comic book IPs eventually. They keep changing the characters around too much and it will irk the fans into just dropping it.

I doubt it. The hardcore fans are few and far between they don't make up most of the sales the casuals do. Doing things like this with a character like strange is even better because he is not a well known character especially when it comes to his origin. I love marvel and dc and I know who strange is but I have no idea about his origin so this stuff doesn't bother me at all. This is how most will feel cause they don't know the real story. People like you who know are way to few to make a difference.

I have yet to read a single Dr. Strange comic but I can read though and have access to the net. Just took me a few minutes to look up basic info on the character and IP.  Comics are exactly like novels and manga. Films and shows are usually based off them. it's acceptable to change some things but not major things about the characters. Film makers should respect the source material. Might as well just make wolverine have ice powers and make jubilee a guy. Game of Thrones is a show that is one of the biggest shows to date but it follows the books closely.

I basically don't watch any comic book films anymore at theatres or general. i look at reviews and if it sounds alright then I might rent it on red box.
