Forums - Nintendo Discussion - So I just played and finished Ocarina of Time for the first time!

So I was long overdue playing this game and just finished the 3ds version of it, thought I'd just give my thoughts on what is considered by many to be the greatest game of all time. I started the n64 version a couple of times but never got further than the dondongo cave as 15fps was too painful and that particular version of the game has not aged well from a performance standpoint.

Anyway after booting the 3ds version which is now in a playable 30fps with some fantastic graphical improvements to cater to my arbritrary millenial standards I was completely HOOKED.

What a fantastic game, I didn't think I'd get so invested, I've never played much of any Zelda game before but the mechanics of this game are just brillaint. Advancing from dungeon to dungeon, each with it's own theme and puzzles, usually introducing a new item and with it a new mechanic... the game is just a masterpiece of pacing and continued addition of new features to the dungeons so the game doesn't get repetitive.

I was also incredibly surprised by the games length, my first ever playthrough took me 25 hours to complete, that is one long ass game, especially considering it's age.

It's hard to think of anything to dislike about the game, even the story and writing were enjoyable, the only improvement I can think of is if Link would retire with his Fishy wife to be Princess Zora.

The game takes a few hours to get it's claws it but once it does you're locked in to a magical journey until it's end... I can't even fault the Final Boss which is saying something...

While I wouldn't say this is definitively the best game of all time, Ocarina of time is mechanically a timeless masterpiece, Nintendo really created something special here and everyone should play through this game at least once.

Though they could have told me it's impossible to beat the running man before I spent 20 minutes trying.

I envy you playing that masterpiece of a game for the first time. Glad to see it still more than holds up to a first-timer in this day and age even with the giant label attached to it.

You gonna play other Zelda games as well?

Better late than never :)

You know what's crazy? I sold my N64 in 1997. I bought another (had to play DK64!) but didn't play Ocarina of Time until I got it for free when I preordered Wind Waker. I thought it was the greatest game, ever!

Later, I played Twilight Princess. I thought IT was the greatest game, ever.

Then, I played Skyward Sword and thought IT was the greatest. game. ever.

Then, I played Minish Cap and thought IT was the greatest game, ever!

Then, I played Link's Awakening and thought that it was the greatest game, ever!!!!

I've come to the conclusion that, no matter what order you play them in, the Zelda game you're currently playing is the greatest game, ever. Even the ones that start slowly eventually suck you in and take over your life.

I am glad for you. :)

You think its great game even today, now somehow just try to imagine playing that game 18 years ago and you can probably get picture why so many people consider Zelda Ocarina Of Time for best game ever. IMO when OoT was released it was perfect game.

Best Zelda ever. And you did well on going with the superior 3DS version.
There are few things better in the N64 version, like the final battle with Ganon, but the 3DS version is still good. The Master Quest is also worth to give a try.

Congratulations.

Never made it out of the water temple.

Definitely one of my all time favorites. When I beat OOT the first time, I felt hollow and sad, because the journey was over. I never felt that way before or after with any game, book, movie, etc. OOT Link became my favorite all time character, and perhaps even a bit of a silent role model. OOT became part of me, and I'd always long for its true successor. Majora's Mask was really good, but more of a sidestory, and if you've ever read anything else I've written about zelda games, you know my undying hatred for Wind Waker, the worst of the Zelda games, IMO.

I got a bit of a reminder of OOT in Twillight Princess, but the wolf transitions detracted for me a little. I do like TP quite a bit, thinking aboui getting the HD version. Skyward Sword was pretty good to me, but you really had to get past the first part of the game to really enjoy it.

I'm looking forward to the next game, to see how it plays out in the storyline.
