Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Witness is getting pirated hard — creator Jonathan Blow warns it’ll impact future projects

First off, Pirates are almost never indicators of true lost sales as most that pirate and then never buy had absolutely no intention of buying either cause they were only slightly curious or just don't give a crap and don't want to pay for anything.

Second, he needs to be patient man. Freaking SKYRIM was number one on Pirate Bay iirc for a good period following launch. And the game did fine. Give it time, if your game has what it takes it will do just fine.

this game was on sale for like $10 last week on PSN. I watched the trailer and decided not to buy it based on that, didn't know it was so popular.

Bullshit. It wasn't even out last week and it costs almost $40 on PSN, nowhere near $10: http://the-witness.net/news/

yeah, I confused it with another puzzle game sorry.

p.s: I watched the trailer for this game and tbh I wouldn't pay more than $12-15

I keep seeing this and people treat it like a fact but it's nothing more than a guess. We really don't know just how many of those pirates would buy the game. Simple as that.

I used to pirate games when I was younger and couldn't undertstand how it was hurtiing the industry. I used to pirate all my ps1, ps2, and psp games (I would still pay money but for the pirated copies which sometimes cost around £3). Eventually I couldn't play a game on psp (Invisimals) and ended up not only buying a new psp to update the firmwire for the camera to work, but actually buying the game. Then I started buying all my psp games instead of downloading them for the patches to work.

I believe that many of those pirated copies would have been sales if the pirates didn't have another option. How many? Probably impossible to tell because even with surveys, it's hard to know whether someone is being honest or not.

If he realizes that pirates wouldn't pay for the game regardless of price, why would he even say such things about DRM? Paraphrased: "I might have to add DRM in order to keep making video games." - You already said that pirates wouldn't pay for your game...

As a former pirate I can say that's bullshit.

Back on topic, people should really stop pirating games made by small studios.

Pretty much how much I'm willing to pay for it as well. I honestly don't get why people complain about initial prices. When it comes to games you're interested in but don't need to play day 1, you can always wait for a price cut. And all games get discounted at some point, so why not just wait?

So many ignorant people in this thread. This game does not have a demo. Most people who play on PC are smart enough to download a pirate version of a game before buying it if it has no demo. This whole "console people pay and PC people steal" thing is ridiculous. There are hundreds of games exclusively on PC and I can't see their makers going to twitter to cry about some pirates. Give the game a fair price, make a demo and stop being a baby. You cannot avoid PC in 2016, piracy is a thing, but just putting DRM into everything is not the solution.

The man but his life savings into the game. That must be hard to watch, He should have went free on PSN+ and he would have sold a ton more, missed oppertunity and an over priced game.

Isn't he selling it anyway on consoles?. I'm sure he's going to make money either way and making some free doesn't automatically mean more money, otherwise that works on PC as well.

Dkyrim was the #1 pirated game back in 2011 and yet it's made more money on PC after these years.

I'll be waiting for a PSN sale on it. I will never pay $40 for a digital title. I'll grab it when it's $20 or less, unless it ends up as a PS+ freebie.

Is it really that hard to make a point without calling other people names? I mean I get it's the internet and all but you can still get your point across without insulting ohers.

And like the creator said, Braid being available for 10 usd didn't stop it from being equally pirated. Dude has some legitimate points and he's so far from crying like a baby, it's not even funny.

Calling out others that show a lack of proper udnerstanding or knowledge is not an insult. Calling someone a dumbass or idiot is an insult. WHen someone is being willfully ignorant, it's especially not an insult when it's proven.

Regardless of what you think of the definition, there are people who are expressing ignorance to suit their own narrative in this thread.

If you want to claim that Braid didn't make enough money on PC and pin it all on Piracy then I honestly don't know what to say because piracy exists not just on PC but on consoles and other areas around the world and yet money is still being made, if you look atht the projections only and not the actual moeny made then you're doing it wrong and pulling a Square Enix, you don't want to pull a SE, especially since I've seen some of you blasting them for them basing their profits on their fabricated expectations.
