Forums - Sales Discussion - NPD Fallout: Sony Blames April on Lack of Software

These are traditionally the slow months anyways. Nintendo and MS aren't pulling out their big guns for the spring, either. Holiday Season 2007 will be the decider for the future of the PS3 (And wii for that matter). I think Xbox360 could weather a mediocre holiday season if things don't go well (though i predict that Xbox should do just fine if not great). If PS3 sells really well this upcoming season, then the system will do just fine for the next 5 years. If it bombs, in that it doesn't sell through the roof, then Sony should hit the panic button.

I think thats based on hope more than anything else..
I predict halo 3 alone will sell more than the total of PS3 games released this year and the 360 will outsell the PS3 by at least 3:1, thats before adding in forza2, shadowrun,  bluedragon, lost oddysey, bioshock, too human, .... and mass effect, pgr4
A combination of the above plus GTA4 (with exclusive online content) could be a bif deciding factor..also expect a dollar by dollar matching of any price cut by sony by MS with the 360..
There seems to be a total apathy for ps3 worldwide, japan is worce than the US and that is its home territory

Sony shouldnt trick themselves with this kind of things .Yes ,the software drought is hurting sales and it will do so until september .June will see The Darkness and GRAW2 and probably Rainbow Six Vegas ,July will see Lair and Ninja Gaiden Sigme ,August the likes of Eye of Judgement ...but its not until september when the games start arriving in good numbers .Until then the PS3 is screwed software-wise .BUT that isnt the only problem ,they must lower the price soon .With no software available it doesnt help lowering the price so SOny must decide a agenda about when to do it trying to make simultaneously the arrival of good software and the price drop . If Sony can descend the price to affordable levels that people perceive as good value for money then even if MS descends its price as well the PS3 will see strong sales . So yes ,the software drought is hurting sales ,especially in Japan where only 7 games have been released in all the year ....BUT that isnt the only problem they should focus in .

But, but... Motorstorm was released 2 weeks before April. I've been told PS3 sales would soar once it was out.

They were upside down so they soared downwards

... fanboys... i'm starting to hate these forums... I agree with Sony the lack of Software is hurting them. Luckily after their showing at the SCEA Gamers Day they proved that the console will jump up with huge sales once some of those titles start being released.

Once, ONCE, _ONCE_ titles are released. I don't think it will really matter. If the next few months have the PS3 below 100K units sold, I'm predicting a LOT of 3rd party devs are going to completely bail on them. FFXIII can't do well on a 3.5m WW system. It'd be better fit for the 360 and PS3 right now. Hell if the sales keep staying this low, it might as well be a 360 exclusive. Sony dropped the ball, down a hole, and is trying to fish it out. Good luck Sony.

... April is always slow when it comes to games.. its mainly due to developement schedules revolving around E3.

No they didn't, SSJ. All they showed was that they have potential. As a Nintendo fan, trust me, Majora's Mask didn't help sales. Conker didn't help sales. Eternal Darkness didn't help sales. Metroid Prime didn't help sales. Resident Evil didn't even help sales that much. Maybe you saw a temporary spike, but trends are trends.

Sony impressed even me with Gamers Day, but it takes a *lot* to dig yourself out of a hole like the PS3 is in. I'm not saying it's not possible. I don't think it's probable, but it could happen that Sony has a series of fortunate events that brings them back into competition. But they need a *series* of events. Gamers Day was just one. And technically, it hasn't happened yet, since it was more a preview for the future.

It isn't "fanboy" to look at bad sales and predict worse sales. It is "fanboy," however, to ignore those bad sales and practically order people to believe sales will magically get better.

It wouldn't surprise me if some titles are being delayed because staff has been reduced in the hope that a PS3 game will be completed around the time the PS3 install base reaches feasible levels for marketing the product. I'm not saying anyone is holding back a -completed- game for that reason, but usually there's a positive tradeoff in slowing down software development -- taking more time costs less, because it actually takes fewer resources if you give them more time (less overhead related to managing a large team, less duplicate effort and misunderstandings/rework.) From a publisher's perspective, right now there's really no rush to get PS3 titles to market -- in fact they may sell significantly better after the expected console price drop. I've overheard a couple of people asking about the PS3 and inquiring/joking about a price drop this week, so there's still interest there if Sony is willing to get the price down. It's a major barrier to entry for users and now publishers at the moment, and something has to give.
