I remember playing this game first a long time ago. When I started playing the game and noticed how different it was from the first Super Mario Bros and how I couldn't kill enemies by jumping on them I was like "what the fuck, I'm not playing this shit" and sort of skipped to SMB3.

However, later on I gave it a try and got really into it. I enjoyed the exercise of timing distance between enemies and myself to hit them with objects and stuff.

I never finished it for some reason. Maybe I had to give away the NES (I had some borrowed) or had problems with my Nintendo emulator or something) but I played it quite far and perhaps one day I'll deal with this unfinished business.

Anyways, since the game is kind of different in the 2D Mario series I wanted to know what you guys thought about it.

Is a nice game, is not even close to the level of Mario Bros or specially Mario bros 3, and you can feel is not a real Mario game instantly, but is enjoyable anyways. Also you can play with Toad, just for that the game gotta be nice.

It's honestly my second favorite 2D Mario after Super Mario World, to be honest.

Great game. Level design manages to reward exploration, which wouldn't be seen again in Mario for years.

Toad is the best character.

I don't get why this game gets so much hate. Sure, it deviates from the SMB formula, but it's still an incredibly fun game, behind SMB 1, 3 and SMW. I've never played it on NES, but I do remember playing this on Super Mario All Stars on the SNES. It was a nice break from the high paced timed games. I also remember completing it and being disappointed at the "it was all a dream" ending. Still, it was an enjoyable game despite its difference from the other games.

Edited for spoilers.

It was quite a challenge

I really liked it as a kid. I never owned it though, so I never got to play deeper into it. I remember getting stuck a lot, and being afraid of the masks that attack you. It's one I really like as well.
