Forums - Politics Discussion - Chicago Police Fatally Shoot 2, Raising New Questions for a Force Under Scrutiny

I have no problem with police in America using force especially when there seems to be a lot of crazy people and people on edge. Plus the country is domestically armed. However I do have a problem with their shoot to kill policy.

For God's sake, how often have they shot an aggressor with no gun to a pulp when all they need to do was shoot him in the legs. Like seriously they have a fucking problem with shooting these guys and not killing them.

Around the Network

I personally have answered domestic calls where the complainant sees her boyfriend or husband going to jail and suddenly gets mad at ME for arresting him. Once, a guy even attacked me. I wrapped him up pretty quickly and had him handcuffed in the back of my car pretty quickly, though. No shots fired, no pepper spray, no taser--but what if he would have gotten my gun?

I don't have the details of this case and I only glanced over the OP. And yes, police make mistakes and some are bad guys. It's hard to tell people what police officers are supposed to do or are justified to do when TV and movies give them false information.

I see "shoot them in the legs" so many times on Facebook. A headshot and limb shot is not an easy thing to do. Hell, body shots are tough but it's your biggest target. Cops don't "shoot to kill". They're trained to " shoot to stop ".

Theres a guy with metal health issues running around aggressively with a metal bat..... its understandable if you shoot they guy, cuz he spooked you (if hes indicateing hes going to swing at you).

this is the problem:

"the woman, Bettie Jones, 55, mother of five, who was a first-floor tenant, was shot by accident as she appeared to have been caught in the situation as she answered a shared front door for the arriving police officers"

Thats a oopsie that ll get you in trouble.
If you spook so easily you shoot someone answearing a door, chances are you shouldnt be allowed to carry a firearm.

Yeah it's America where you have to assume that everybody has a gun. The police having heavy weaponry is a side effect of the fact that people can go out and buy all kinds of guns. What's a teaser going to do to people with guns?
Note that I'm not giving any excuse as to the shooting of these two people.

^ this is the problem.

Everyone has firearms in the US, and they kill so many innocents (many many times more, than they protect or save).

I get that US police is more trigger happy than police forces in countrys with tighter gun laws. I know I would be on my fucking guard if I knew basically everyone could whip out a gun on me.

However, a lot of US law enforment also seems to be underqualified and badly trained for the job.
In the US, as far as i'm aware, the training varies by state, but can be as short as only six weeks of police academy, with 19 to 21 weeks being more commom (training is in most cases continued for 6 to 12 months on the job). A highschool degree is required to be able to apply.

To contrast, in my country, the minimum training required is 30 months for the basic training and 36 months for a university degree in police work (usually required for higher police positions). New officers are then trained on the job for up to two years after that. This amounts to 4,5 -5 years of training compared to the ca 1,5 the average US cop gets. A high-school degree as well as passing an entrance exam (comprised of an IQ test, medical evaluation, psycological evaluation and a fitness test) is required to start training.

I feel like, a cop with sufficient training should be able to disarm a guy with a baseball bat without making use of his firearm. (I'm not talking about "shooting a leg" btw. I know cops are trained to go for the mass of the body)

The USA does test police applicants IQ's, if they score too high they are rejected (http://www.nytimes.com/1999/09/09/nyregion/metro-news-briefs-connecticut-judge-rules-that-police-can-bar-high-iq-scores.html).

Chicago is dangerous. I go to school in Chicago and people get shot/stabbed around campus every week.
