Bit of each. Games should do both really.

I like both linear and open world games, and appreciate their differences.
Linear games' strength is immersion and attention to detail, plus generally a more polished experience.
Open world has freedom and more content usually.
I consider the Last of Us the best linear I have ever played. For story, atmosphere and gameplay.
PS, PS2, Gameboy Advance, PS3, PSP, PS4, Xbox One
Both are fine, I like a linear area with some options so my experience isn't the same on multiple play throughs. Sometimes game tells the story and then there are gameplay moments want to enjoy. Last of Us did a great job balancing the two to feel like a tight narrative that allowed for some freedom in play style.
I prefer all types of games but didnt like tlou
I am dissapointed when i played it after so many praises from the gaming press

I Hate REMASTERS
I Hate PLAYSTATION PLUS
I prefer semi linear games. Games with just enough to do and enough freedom to feel like everything you're doing has a unique and powerful impact every step of the way.
There's a balance that must be kept juggling between how much you can do vs what is useful. Some games get that more right than others.
