Forums - Gaming Discussion - What the hell is going on with the 8th gen?

First we have dlc and season passes announced before the game even comes out. Then we have full $60 multiplayer only games with barebones cotent.

And now we have games split into episodes as if its some fucking tv series. And we have we out here defending this garbage? EPISODES!? When has this practise become acceptable? I think this generation might turn out to be the worst by a massive margin. I can't even imagine where gaming will be at the end of it. Hell, there might just be another crash.

How do you feel about FF VII:R being episodic?

Personally, I hate the idea. There is simply no way that this can be an actual remake with this episodic format. We need a full, realized world that you can explore like in the original game. If you section all of this off, the game loses a big part of what made FFVII, FFVII. And don't get me started about the combat changes.

Basically, this game is Final Fantasy VII in name alone.

Games cost a lot more to create than they used to. Other ways of obtaining profit are needed. F2P with microtransactions in Dota2 (LoL is for people who suck at video games) are unbelievable with how much revenue it brings in and how little it costs to make the cosmetic-only item.

Too early to say at this point.

What is the problem with it being episodic?

Nope. No crash. more like the opposite. All these different things you mentioned are happening cause their is a market for all of them.

Destiny shows there is a market for multiplayer focused games and you will see the good examples of those and the bad ones. Technically, M.A.G tried to do something similar on the PS3 but lacked the depth.

Telltale has shown their is a market for episodic games and again, you will see the good and the bad of that model.

COD showed that people are into DLC and again you will see its highs and lows. On one end we will have Evolve and deus X crazy dlc plans and on the other we have the beautiful stuff from Drive club, bloodborne and the last of us who are doing dlc right.

Point is though, these things wouldn't happen and be getting this bad if they didn't make money from them. So don't blame them, blame the people paying for it.

You do realise the gaming industry and potential consumers has also grown over the years? That is no excuse. We have games with $100m+ budgets break even in mere days. Thats just a cop out publishers try to use to implement these greedyass practises.

The cost of the game is not my problem as a gamer.  Square should invest however much it takes to make this game correctly, as the return would still be enormous. Just because they could make more money designing the game under a different model, doesn't excuse that they are sacrifing a complete game for more profit. Personally, I find that insulting. If you're going to remake Final Fantasy VII, the least they could do is attempt to do it right.

Did the programmers and project managers receive 75k-200k a year a decado ago? No.

As for this game, I have no idea. Never played a FF game.  Played plenty of JRPGs, Grandia is one of my favorite franchises, but oddly never FF.

Why they are doing it, I have no idea.  Maybe to get more money out of it, maybe to get the game out sooner and not wait an extra 6months to a year. Dunno.

Nothing wrong with episodes
