Forums - Gaming Discussion - How is it possible that the X1 and PS4 are already basically the same price as a Wii U?

Two things:

1) Economy of scale: With how few Wii U's are selling they aren't getting the most efficient pricing.

2) The stupid tablet: It drives up the price $50-$80

In early 2012 it did.  It doesn't cost that today.

Do you have a quote on how much it costs today?!  Otherwise I have to assume $50.

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

Yes, it's the gamepad that is driving up the price... Japan is selling a standalone gamepad for around $100 USD so..

Well margin for peripherals can be over 50%, so the gamepad could cost less than 50. So there is no good reason for the package be over 200.

Nintendo is stupid?

I am sorry but I am not trolling!  If the Wii U could be sold for $150 - it should be!  Otherwise as usual Nintendo is stuck in the past!

Wii U gamepad is like 80-150$ compared to x1 and ps4 controllers which are $50.

Why then Nintendo is selling it for $100 in Japan!?

Build costs of Wii U gamepad were around $80 in 2012, today build costs are probably around $50-60, Wii U pro controller build cost are around $15, so today without Wii U gamepad we could have around $50 Wii U lower price at most. So its not like that Wii U would have price of $150 like people are assuming, buy official price around $250 instead current $300 definitely.

Well they could be.

or perhaps they saw pricedrops not greatly affecting selling rate and decided to maximize Sales

Do you wanna sell ten consoles a year at $300 or elevem a year at $200? At this point the sales aren't gonna make up for the price cut - remember that during the GC years they couldn't give the damn thing away, at one point it was $50 and still selling like garbage.

Plus, I do believe there was an issue where one of their chips was exclusively made by one contractor that got bought out (believe it or not I think I vaguely recall Sony being the one buying them out, don't hold me to that though); I think they ended up turning that into a profitable situation but at first it was a pretty big problem.

Lastly, they only relatively recently sold through their original model of Wii U, which cost more to manufacture than the slightly updated model. Those weren't profitable at sub-$300, but apparently these are.

Yes Sony bought the factory, but that didn't made the price of the part rise since Nintendo probably had a contract already.

If my recollection is correct, Nintendo stated that the loss of the manufacturer was an issue, so I don't believe the contract worked out once Sony bought that factory out. No clue what they did from there, since it's Nintendo and they're always quiet about that sort of thing, but like I said IIRC they made specific note of there being a chip shortage due to a lost manufacturer.

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

Could be a problem in contract renew, but I don't think they changed during curse of contract.

EVERYBODY, buy the best console in the future - the PS4. ign.com say: more than 200 games next year on PlayStation 4, that is so amazing.

Yeah, they have done that the past two generations now, and it is time to give up that mindset.  Not sure how they really got into that, but they need to drop it ASAP.  Clearly, no one else cares.

Eh....Eherm.....I...I care! :P

No seriously, I appreciate it. I'm a student, I'm not swimmimng in money. So everything I don't have to spend on my power bill, I can spend on games/assorted nice things. Maybe electricity is cheaper in the US or something, but it's pretty expensive where I live and prices are rising pretty much yearly.

Electricity is expensive over here. A "normal" amount to pay every bill is around the $400-500 Mark. I believe the providers are just greedy, because the watt price isn't too expensive.

Here the Gamepad and the Pro controller are on the same site.
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wiiu/hardware/accessories/

Gamepad - ¥12 800 (if you go to the shop it will sell for ¥13 824)
Pro Controller - ¥4 800

Difference is ¥8 000
That is approximately $65
