Forums - Sony Discussion - How Much Will PlayStation VR (Morpheus) Impact PS4 Sales?

?

A lot! 34 13.28%

A moderate impact 65 25.39%

A little 72 28.13%

Irrelevant 76 29.69%

Negative Impact 9 3.52%

It's not a secret that the PS4 is selling amazingly well since it released back in 2013, and with a bright line up for 2016 one should expect sales do improve even more. But there's another factor to note: 2016 marks the release of the long awaited PlayStation VR. The big question is: how much will it affect PS4's sales? Will it make them improve a lot? Will it be irrelevant? Will it have a negative impact on the console's image?

Personally I'm thinking the initial boost will be somewhat irrelevant but in the long run it'll have some good positive impact. What do you guys think?

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Next to nothing. The cost of someone buying a PS4 to then get a PSVR will be gigantic. The PSVR is clearly targeted for people that already own a PS4 and even then, and thats my opinion, wont sell like hotcakes.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Absolutely none. There will be no detectable difference in PS4 sales (I'm talking like less than. 5%) upon PSVR's launch.

Edit: I should elaborate before I get quoted. The weekly sales will be higher because PS4 will increase YoY but the percentage comparing the average YoY to that week's will be nonexistent.

It will be like move or Kinect. It may well sway 1 or 2 million casuals. Ps4 and ps VR would be a good Xmas present.

PlayStation VR is going to move PS4 at rates that even the Wii never reached. This is the future of digital interaction.

Sony is moving PlayStation beyond being a gaming machine, and therefore it is no longer going to sell like one. Between PlayStation VR and PlayStation Vue, PlayStation is in direct competition with the 400M set topboxes across the world and the billions of PC and Macs on the market.

PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift are going to be buzzing for the next decade. This is the next Windows & Mac, the next iOS & android. The world of Gaming is changing, the world of Entertainment is chaning, and the world of Productivity is changing.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. I found the Sony rep.

Joking aside, PS VR is not Oculus. If PS VR has applications outside of needing a PS4 to run, it has a shot at being a game changer like you describe. But nobody forks $400 on a PS4 and then forks $300+ more on an add-on that won't be supported that much. Remember the $150 Kinect that was gonna change the industry, or how PS Move was the next big thing? Kinect has had a couple applications in the field outside of a soulless entertainment device, and THAT is where Oculus is going to thrive, not as entertainment but in other industries. It helped that Microsoft made Kinect somewhat compatible with PC. From my recollection PSVR is not going to have PC compatability. Same with PS Camera on PS3/4, which aren't compatible with PC either from what I've experienced. Sony doesn't like to cross support, and they're going to be selling the PSVR purely as entertainment as such. That's a failure waiting to happen, because casuals do not and will not care about VR devices when you can pay $20 for a piece of cardboard that makes your phone a VR device.

PS Vue is going to take quite some time before it becomes standardized - look at Google Fiber or Google Fi for another example of how hard it is for companies to break into the media markets. Google is one of the most powerful companies in the world and even they can't break in because of how controlled the markets are. They've been stopped a dozen times whenever they try to make headway.

The PS4 will continue to sell like crack but that doesn't mean everything Sony is doing with it is gonna be gold too. Remember Powers?

Sony have to bundle it with a much more attractive price tag or else i don't see its gonna have any impact at all...

All I know is that I want it.
