Sony is moving PlayStation beyond being a gaming machine, and therefore it is no longer going to sell like one. Between PlayStation VR and PlayStation Vue, PlayStation is in direct competition with the 400M set topboxes across the world and the billions of PC and Macs on the market. PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift are going to be buzzing for the next decade. This is the next Windows & Mac, the next iOS & android. The world of Gaming is changing, the world of Entertainment is chaning, and the world of Productivity is changing. |
I found the Sony rep.
Joking aside, PS VR is not Oculus. If PS VR has applications outside of needing a PS4 to run, it has a shot at being a game changer like you describe. But nobody forks $400 on a PS4 and then forks $300+ more on an add-on that won't be supported that much. Remember the $150 Kinect that was gonna change the industry, or how PS Move was the next big thing? Kinect has had a couple applications in the field outside of a soulless entertainment device, and THAT is where Oculus is going to thrive, not as entertainment but in other industries. It helped that Microsoft made Kinect somewhat compatible with PC. From my recollection PSVR is not going to have PC compatability. Same with PS Camera on PS3/4, which aren't compatible with PC either from what I've experienced. Sony doesn't like to cross support, and they're going to be selling the PSVR purely as entertainment as such. That's a failure waiting to happen, because casuals do not and will not care about VR devices when you can pay $20 for a piece of cardboard that makes your phone a VR device.
PS Vue is going to take quite some time before it becomes standardized - look at Google Fiber or Google Fi for another example of how hard it is for companies to break into the media markets. Google is one of the most powerful companies in the world and even they can't break in because of how controlled the markets are. They've been stopped a dozen times whenever they try to make headway.
The PS4 will continue to sell like crack but that doesn't mean everything Sony is doing with it is gonna be gold too. Remember Powers?
