Forums - Sales Discussion - Playstation 3: An Under Rated System

You can't look at marketing FUD (specs) and then draw definitive conclusions, especially if you don't know crap about technology and it's application, about which system is delivering the best performance in real world situations. You know that all parties will omit every detail that is going to make it look bad, so you only see the fancy numbers. I am developing engines for a living, and have done so for 10+ years on many consoles, and currently work on both PS3 and 360. Unlike the vast majority of poeple that comment on the technology in these consoles, I am actually able to run benchmarks on both consoles since I have a PS3 and a 360 dev kit in my office. If you don't like what I'm saying, well, tough.
I personally don't doubt you, but if you are running benchmarks, is there any chance of a screenshot or bar graph?

If you insult a console, someone will criticise you. If you compliment a system, someone will criticise you. I declare it impossible to create a thread that pleases everyone in the world.

Developers are underestimating the power of the Playstation 3, therefore, they aren't using its maximum power.

Stop making stuff up please. That is just plain nonsense.

The PS3 GPU is pretty much crap compared to the 360 GPU and during the console's lifetimes it will show. It doesn't mean there's not going to be very nice, well made titles for PS3. It just means that if you put an equal amount of effort and talent (which is what matters the most) in developing a PS3 and 360 title, the 360 title is going to look better. The Cell isn't going to save it when it comes to graphics.

Ok.... Please have facts to backup your own statements. If you can accuse someone else of making stuff up, you are no different if you dun have proof of your self made theories. Anyone can say anything! Whether it is true or not, please have some proof.

The PS3 can be converted to a home nuclear reactor to power your house for 100 years. - My own rubbish, just like yours.

Why do I need to give you the facts? Can't you surf the Internet yourself? It's not like I am the only person who knows the technical specifications of the system. Go to www.wikipedia.org, and read the facts yourself. My thread has no connection to the Playstation 3. My thread is long enough already. To include facts, of which I assumed everyone already knew, would only increase its size. I didn't think adding more information to my thread would be that important. Go to www.wikipedia.org, and look at the technical specifications of the Playstation 3, and Xbox 360.

Playstation 3's GPU = 550. Xbox 360's GPU = 500.

And I know someone is going to complain about that statement, saying it means nothing. Well, there are other facts that show that the Playstation 3 is superior, graphical wise, to the Xbox 360, which can be found on www.wikipedia.org.

I was referring to Taz42.

Let my try to explain why I think "Developers are underestimating the power of the Playstation 3, therefore, they aren't using its maximum power." doesn't make sense. The reason is that every title that is trying to push fancy graphics is going to be overly ambitious and have bad frame rate during parts of its development. Towards the end of the production both code and content is optimized in order to reach the target frame rate. You just don't end up in a situation where you have left over performance just because you tried to do too little, especially when it comes to GPU performance. When we first got the PS3 SKU up and running the game was running at ~5 fps. It took a ton of work to get it up to 30. You could draw the conclusion from this is that we overestimated the performance by 500%, but that wouldn't exactly be true either. We count on optimizations to fix performance issues to some degree. In contrast, if we had underestimated the performance, the game would have run at 1920x1080 at 60fps before we did any optimization. (if only!) // You never mentioned which console's graphically superior. You just said a whole bunch of stuff. My first post should be clear about that. :)

It is underrated in that most people won't pay the 600$ to play it so many people don't experience it. I mean i think it's a great system along with many people, but I will not dish out the 600$.

If Xbox 360 is capable of running games with better graphics than the Playstation 3, than that is just embarassing, because Sony focused on graphics more than its competitors. If the Playstation 3 doesn't have the graphics, than what does it have? Right now, Nintendo has the controller. Xbox 360 has the games. Playstation 3 should have had the graphics. I don't understand how a game on an HD DVD disc could be better than a game on a Blu-Ray disc.

360 games don't run on hd-dvd, so yeah, it would be very hard for a game on hd-dvd to be better right now; no such device exists.

It is already becoming an advantage for Sony, the blu-ray drive that is, since a collectors edition of Stranglehold will contain a blu-ray version of the movie Hard Boiled on the same disc as the game. Stranglehold is a sequel to the critically acclaimed John Woo movie.

Also, concerning graphics, the only game that has suffered on the PS3 is F.E.A.R. because Day 1 Studios had only worked on the xbox and 360 before. They did both ports from the PC, the 360 version was good but the PS3 version wasn't. That's just a bad port. There have been no other major differences, and many PS3 games look better, like Oblivion, that also loads MUCH faster.

Edit:  I'd also like to mention that Day 1 Studios will be doing the multi-platform (360 and PS3) title, Fracture.  Hopefully they'll learn how to use the PS3 for that one.

I think what a.l.e.x59 meant is there is no clear-cut or overwhelming graphical advantage to be seen by the PS3 as of yet.

Let's see if Day 1 can come up with a multi-plat title that does show the differences between the two consoles (favorably for the PS3, that is), but I'm afraid that being cross-ports they won't be very different, hence any potential graphic superiority (for either console, if there is any) won't be apparent.

Not sure if it was him or not that I was responding to, but someone said that the games so far showed a superiority on the 360.  Other than Gears and that bad port, I disagree, that's all.  I'm not sure that any multi-plat release will show any differences unless they are more proficient with one system over another (such as Day 1 Studios so far).

I agree that there is not a clear-cut advantage when comparing games out so far, but we're seeing the PS3 games improving already, and Motorstorm is already up there as one of the best graphical games.
