Because let's face it, 8th gen handhelds are dead consoles walking. Some people might argue that Wii U is as well, being that NX seems to be imminent. But you can't have a home console showdown without having the current gen Nintendo system. In any case I'm not interested in handhelds, they might as well be mobile phones for all I care [them's fightin' words]. If someone wants to do a handheld showdown more power to them I say.
So I'm going to try to keep this table updated with each week's global numbers, and we'll be able to see how each console is doing compared to itself over the final quarter of last year. If there are adjustments to the official chartz, please let me know because I might miss them.

Will PS4 beat itself? Seems like a no-brainer, price cut and some 3rd party marketing deals to help push sales, as well as some decent 2nd and 3rd tier exclusives.
Wii Xb one beat itself? A bit less certain. With an official price cut unlikely, Xb one is mostly relying on the selling power of Halo 5. Lots of arguments about whether Halo is becoming a shadow of its former self as a system seller. I guess we'll have a good idea of the answer once this table has been completely filled. A console should see yoy growth between year 1 and year 2. But a price cut in year 1 and [probably] no price cut in year 2 is the opposite of the normal pattern. So flat or down is possible.
Wii U, where's that going? Is it possible to sell lower? There's been some nice software released this year, and rumours of a price cut. Nitendo seems to have won a battle against streamers and youtubers this year, but those people should normally be seen as allies in the console war, or at least neutral parties with whom you can entrust your valuables. Can Wii U improve on last year?
I've pasted the table as a table from Word rather than a spreadsheet. I hope the formatting works out and I don't have any hassles when it comes to editing.
Wish me luck. I've not really done one of these before.
Update 11 Nov 2015: Have added actual weekly numbers for w/e 31 Oct, and have extrapolated from the YoY monthly graphing tools to provide an average for the previous weeks as a place holder. These numbers will be corrected as and when the weekly charts get updated. I'm told the aim is to get global weekly charts updated at a rate of approx every 2 days. So maybe in about 8-10 days we'll have all Oct numbers finalised.
Update 13 Nov 2015: Added weekly actuials for w/e10 Oct. The good news is we'll be able to extrapolate the w/e 24 Oct numbers once we get the w/e 17 Oct global chart.
Update 15 Nov 2015: I've added in what I have worked out to be the numbers for the 24th of October taken from the monthy totals minus the 3 weeks we already know. Some hefty adjustment to the month, especially for PS4, dropping its total to below 1 million for the month and putting it substantially down YoY. Rather a surprising result for a price cut, but as observed the LE bundles releasing in November might be partly or mostly responsible for this. Time will tell.
Update 23 Nov 2015: Just added totals for w/e 14 Nov. I can't be bothered trying to estimate w/e 7 Nov.
Update 25 Nov 2015: Added totals for w/e 7 Nov.
Update 7 Dec 2015: Added totals for w/e 12 and 29 Nov.
Update 12 Dec 2015: Added totals for w/e 5 Dec. Adjustments made to all previous weeks.
Update 24 Dec 2015: Added totals for W/e 12 Dec. Haven't checked for adjustments.
Update 5 Jan 2016: Added numbers for w/e 19 and 26 Dec. 19 Dec numbers are approximations as for some reason my browser isn't bringing up the 19 Dec number table on the hardware graph tool. But it's close enough. Fixed Wii U YoY number for 12 Dec from negative to positive.
Final update: So there you have it folks. PS4 ends on 8.9 million, Xb one ends on 4.8 million, Wii U ends on 2.1 million. PS4 is hugely up YoY, Xb one is slightly down, Wii U is decently up.
