Forums - Sales Discussion - 03 October 2015 Global chart

I feel like we should impose a more appropriate format for thread titles and opening posts in these new sales threads going forward because as is every thread titles are different and OPs are kind of messy. This is a fresh start! Let's make it proper!

I am sorry, but I think it's about time that VGC gives up on trying to guess numbers....software at least.

Because it's becoming ridiculous. Today's casualty: NBA 2K16.
VGC is giving us a figure barely touching 1 million, 2K has made an announcement weeks ago about selling 4 million. (shipping, to be exact)

http://m.ign.com/articles/2015/10/02/nba-2k16-sales-figures-revealed

No matter who has the authority to publish these numbers, it is obvious that a 300% error is pitiful. And no, they certainly don't have a 3:1 digital/retail split, when every other game is 1:5 at best. Unless you really think that they only sold a small fraction of the shipment.

Concentrate on the forums, guys. Numbers that are a month too late and this much off target are just laughable, no wonder this website is ridiculed in other places.

It's important to note this doesn't mean 4 million copies of the game are now in the hands of players - instead it indicates how many copies have been picked up by retailers." From the same source you posted.

I pointed that out.

Are you claiming that this game has achieved a historical overshipping record...shipping 4 million then selling under one. You would think that stores would be selling them for $5 by now.

Going towards the Holidays and looking at sales of previous entries is enough to justify a large shipment even if it doesn't sell most of it in its first week. That being said NPD had NBA 2K16 at over 1.1m first week in the US whereas VGC has it at 811k. So it is probably undertracked but shipment numbers aren't telling much for first week sales in this case.

NPD says NBA 2K16 sold a bit more than 1.1 million physically, sooooooo..... I mean, I know that these numbers are global, but do you honestly believe it sold a lot outside of the US?

Sure, it looks a bit undertracked, because US numbers aren't actually at 1.1 million, but the game hardly sold something like 3 million first week or whatever. It probably sold like 1.5 million physically.

Actually, I think this game sells well in Europe and Latin America, NBA is the second most popular sport in most places after football.

And, sure, I can concede that they overshipped by 100% (I doubt it, but you guys seem sure about it), it still doesn't excuse the pitiful state of these chartz. I mean, they even have concrete NPD numbers (thanks Boutros and others, I didn't know them before) and still make a 50% error at best. After being late over a month.

It doesn't mean that they overshipped by 100% though. It means that the initial shipment is meant to last more than just one week.

EDIT: at least in the UK, using UK charts we can work out that NBA 2K sold more than 15k but less than 30k all platforms combined. I know there's a lot more in Europe than just the UK, but it is one of the biggest, if not the biggest European market, and the fact that even there it sells so little should tell us that it didn't exactly sell huge numbers in Europe.

Isn't basketball mostly popular in southern/eastern Europe though? Not exactly the largest markets for game sales, can't see it doing all that well in latin America either. FIFA/PES don't even do huge numbers there and even if basketball is popular there it's not even going to be close to football in the larger countries such as Brazil. Besides, I've also seen claims that some games sold in latin America are actually US imports so would have been included with the NPD sales anyways.

I'm from latin america, and everybody here buy fifa and pes, basketball isn't that popular.

Well, as I can see that everybody else is satisfied with VGC making errors of at least 50%, I understand that my posts are completely unnecessary.
If you are willing to accept these numbers, phantom sales of XOne Spiderman when it hasn't released, missing sales of Vita Borderlands 2 bundle etc., great for you. I am looking forward to a few weeks when we will find out how VGC extrapolates numbers of Tomb Raider PS4 version.

The VGC numbers have been ranging from merely unreliable to complete crap for quite a while now, I stopped giving them any credit long time ago. A fake gypsy at the state fair can guess better than this website.

I think the issue here lies more with the fact that you start off by claiming there's a 300% error, and now you say theres a 50% error. There's a pretty big difference between those two figures.

Also there's a reason Machina set up a thread where we can give official game sales anouncements so that they can adjust software sales.

I still think the error is much much bigger. I put 50% so that VGC defense league can feel better about themselves, as they obviously accept every bullshit served to them by this site.

I mean, if the management of this site is not even capable of following sales announcements (not like there are dozens of them on a daily basis) but have to beg peoplebfor links, it is obvious that they are doing a piss poor halfassed job. In return, I adblock them so that they don't receive revenue from me for their shitty job.
