The context here is very different though. There is a huge difference in the amount of risk involved when developing for the next Playstation or Xbox compared to developing for a tech that is still a rather large unknown.

The big factor will be whether MS sees fit to give them out for free. The PS4 dev kit was roughly $2500 but Sony gave tons of them out to smaller devs for free.

I was corrected on this recently. PS4 and Xbox dev kits are around $5000

Whoever corrected you was very wrong. The PS4 dev kit was $2500 and the Xbox One dev kit was actualy just a normal Xbox One, so $500.

Edit: But as I said, even if they were more expensive (which they aren't) the risk of spending the money on a dev kit for an upcoming major console is much lower than one for something like AR.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Yeah? I mean...It's developers who gave that number. Any quotable source for 5k?

Well since Microsoft have a tremendous asset on their possession, and a large investor that ready to back up their project, is time they money hated games developer or tech developer by giving it free, so the more company has it the more people try, and the faster the improvement of hologram tech will be. and I hope google and any other company who pursuing this tech will do the same thing, then i hope holographic tech will come sooner then we expect.

So, how is 3k for a devkit too much?
I bet they wrote this news on a 2.5k MacBook pro.

I mean that is about 2 weeks / half a month of salary for the developer who is actually working on it.

Sure.  No prob.  While you're at it, go right ahead and get you a dev kit or four.  Give them away as Christmas gifts.  That's what I plan to do.

Is he a dev?
