Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Spencer: People play Co-Op via Xbox Live, that may be the reason for no Split Screen Co-Op in Halo 5

Let Spencer say what he wants, with the way things are going with XB1 it's very likely he knows he's going to lose his job or get demoted.

^ I don't think that is going to happen.

He said people don't play Halo local as much according according to data. Doesn't mean anything in relation to MP in general or VR.

We obviously don't know for machines that don't connect, but yeah. When you look at where most of the multiplayer happens in games, Live (is the place) just because it's so easy. I don't have to have somebody at my house. I love the nostalgia of the couch co-op of what Halo did in the past, but I also know in the realities of the day with people's busy lives, it's not as easy to get everybody in the same physical place. It's one of the advantages that Xbox Live obviously offers."

This don't seem exclusive to Halo does it?

Uh.. yes? I mean, he even mentions Halo by name right there in the quote you posted?

Couch co-op in Halo has been replaced by online co-op. 343i drops couch co-op from Halo 5. Phil Spencer says he does not want VR to become the norm in gaming because it will eliminate local social play.

You understand Microsoft still offers other games that have local split screen play?

There are still plenty of couch co-op/MP games you can play right now and in the future. Phil thinks VR would ruin that. Halo has already been "ruined" in that aspect even without help from VR. This is simple stuff, the reach is laughable. I am done.

Halo is just the proximate example of what he claims is a generally dying trend. My guess though is perhaps it is true for Halo. Halo is a franchise that is not really attracting new, younger gamers who are more likely to want to co-op with their friends, just like all "older" gamers here describe their Halo CE experiences when they were poor teenagers with just one Xbox between 4 mates. So because Halo's audience is skewing older because it's mostly original Xbox owners buying Halo, co-op for Halo specifically is becomming less relevant, perhaps at a greater rate than the general trend of gamers becoming older on average and hence local co-op becoming less relevant (albeit more slowly). So it is a trend in gaming preference that is happening faster with Halo, perhaps.

The reason online gaming has also become such a staple is because most of us who played local multiplayer when we were younger are now older, busier, and spread apart.

Phil Spencer isn't entirely wrong, either, as most people in this thread are also referring to their younger years of playing local multiplayer, not recognizing that they are now most likely living away from their family and childhood friends, or are away at college, or any number of various situations that separates people. Online multiplayer became a staple when the convenience was slowly recognized as a way to somewhat combat how far apart we tend to grow as age sets in.

I miss local multiplayer, and I still love it, but it's also an old-fashioned sentiment. I agree the option would be nice, but it's just not really a "necessity" anymore in modern gaming. Add in the quality of system party chat in modern systems, and you can't punch your friends or knock the controllers out of their hands, but can make up for that with an extended length of extreme obscenities!

so kids dont play games? College students? screw them?

They do, and they go online, and squeak cuss words a whole bunch, and everyone tells them they sound like Justin Bieber

Always hate when businessmen give the lame excuse of "we think people play this a certain way so we didn't include it this way".

He should have stayed silent. People still play splitscreen. And not everybody has online. Hell even if you do, nothing beats the fun of split screen/local mutliplayer.

Exactly and the X1 is the second choice for this generation so most people won't even play it online and pay o Live just for one game.If I had an X1 I would not be paying for Live due to me preferring the PS4 and I already pay for PSN,which I would be playing more games on.I would play off line co op and this would be a kick in the head to me.The Xboxis no longer the go to system for online gaming.

your facts are wrong with 40millions and rising subscribers not only XBL is by far the biggest online service on console it also clearly the most profitable....

- Spencer said in San Francisco as he took questions from journalists during promotion for Halo 5:

"In the end, the teams make decisions based on the bar that they want to hit for complexity of what they're going to run on a single box.

Or to say it with easy words: "343 Industries is not able to build a well performing split screen mode with the ressources we want to spend."

Silence is golden, Mr. Spencer.

Phil says:
VR is great but i don't want it to be the only future of gaming because...

Phil says:
We had to make compromises and because the way people play (Halo) coop changed our compromise for this specific game was no splitscreen.

Now, where's the contradiction?
If MS had a VR headset in their pocket Halo would probably be one of the first games with VR support. Another one would be Forza.

P.S.: i would've preferred 30fps splitscreen over no splitscreen for Halo!
