Gran Turismo 6 Sells 2.37 Million Copies, 72.6 Million For GT Series

September 3rd, 2015 by Jordan

As part of the ongoing litigation by Italian flooring company VIRAG, SCEA shared GT6 sales statistics with the Northern District Court of California. Magistrate Judge Laurel Beeler’s ruling in the court documents show this number to be 2.37 million copies for GT6, bringing the Gran Turismo franchise to 72.6 million copies sold across its 17-year history:

In December 2010, the defendants released Gran Turismo 5, which included a simulated version of the Monza Track. In the course of designing Gran Turismo 5, the defendants willfully and intentionally chose to include the VIRAG® mark on a simulation of the bridge from the Monza Track.

Sony America distributed the Gran Turismo 5 game globally, including throughout the United States and North America, and to date over 10.89 million copies have been sold. The defendants’ unauthorized use and display of the VIRAG® mark continued in Gran Turismo 6, which was released in December 2013. To date, over 2.37 million copies of Gran Turismo 6 have been sold.

Despite its performance relative to GT5 – and its release on the aging PS3 console – GT6 still appears to have outsold its contemporary competitors, topping the PS4’s Driveclub (2 million copies), the Xbox One-exclusive Forza Motorsport 5 (estimated at ~2 million copies), and the multi-platform Project CARS (~1 million copies).

It’s also interesting to note that GT5 sold an additional 230,000 copies since March of 2013 (when Polyphony last updated their sales page), a somewhat remarkable performance considering GT6’s release on the same console and the termination of GT5’s online services in May of 2014.

72.6 million is indeed a lot and shows how important the game was and still is for Sony. Hopefully GT7 will be a worthy successor.

But, as the title suggests:

As of this article: "over 2.37 million copies"As in reply to the most recent conversation on my wall with a user who was convinced that GT6 is undertracked on VGC.

Good sales for any other racing game but a massive disappointment for Gran Turismo. It's a shame considering I liked it better than GT5. Hopefully it's an outlier as far as sales goes for the series.

PSN: extremeM

PlayStation Vita Japanese Software Sales (Media Create Physical/ Famitsu Digital)

So GT 6 is overtracked, but the franchise as a whole in undertracked here slightly.

For most other racing franchises those numbers would be great, for GT6 however they're really disappointing.

Wow, very low numbers for a GT title. Will be lucky to hit 3m at this point. O.o

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Sony really should have released in this one PS4. what a drop in sales and all due to the game being released after the PS4 released.

At the very least it should have been cross-gen.

Agreed. IMO it should have been a 2014 holiday title. that way they would have had 4 years to work on the game and take advantage of the PS4.

They released it too late in the consoles life cycle. Had it been on the PS4 they would have sold far more copies.

Me and my friends usually buy GT on release, but we bought the PS4 and GT6 was not even thought about. I'm hoping they release the next title soon. At the very least they should have ported it for the PS4 or made a PS4 port, but I think Sony got screwed by believing DC would be ready.

And cross-buy, to be honest. GT6 felt like it didn't belong to PS3, in my opinion. It was way too late but still had some sales. To get more money and to give PS4 a blockbuster racer as Driveclub was delayed at launch this would've been the way better option.

Does anyone know if PD get paid for GT academy, helping and consulting for car manufacturers and for winning races etc.

Wonder if this money goes to PD towards GT costs or something else.
