It's best Nintendo not bank on such risky technology, they should stick to something simple and affordable as they launch mid generation, they can risk it when the next round of consoles are ready to launch.

To me VR is unproven technology, people are banking on it selling, but I honestly think it's going to follow 3D and fail, just like both did back in the 80s.

Put it this way, 3D was more mainstream the VR will ever be, 3D was available in theaters, it was available at home, it was supported by all the major consumer electronics brands from 3D digital cameras to 3D TV and yet once the novelty wore off it died in the ass, also it failed to take off on PC with Nvidia 3D vision. I guess people didn't like how cumbersome the active 3D glasses were, how they had to buy a 3D capable TV along with a 3D blu-ray player and then wait for a limited release of 3D blu-ray movies, 3D gaming was niche as hell cuz the PS3 could barely do it and the PC required top end GPUs, usually SLI to just get the same level of graphics you had with normal 2D....hardly seemed worth it.

So after all of this VR is some how suppose to take off? how can it take off when it's EVEN more cumbersome than the active 3D glasses were, but it gets worse, unlike the 3D glasses which were hands free, the VR units all seemed to be tethered and to make things even worse its a solo experience that locks you out of the real world...PSVR is at least attempting some social things with their couch co-op but obviously it will be limited. All of this so far is against VR taking off and we have yet to discuss the price of these dam VR units, there's a reason why they haven't mentioned prices, cuz they will be dam expensive yet again being another barrier to entry, with the final barrier being PC hardware. Since frame rate is key with VR how many of the mainstream will have a computers decent enough to even run VR properly? This is such a super niche product that will fail with the core before it even has a chance to take off with the mainstream and no FaceBook amount of branding will get this turd to fly.

PSVR may be the only to actually stand a chance of hitting mainstream since hardware is simple and consumer friendly, all VR games will work at desired frustrates and is in over 30million homes, but even then with the price and limited games and experience I only see it doing maybe half of what the original kinect did.

Long story short, VR doesn't solve any of the problems that 3D glasses had but instead makes them worse, mainstream like very low barriers of entry with products that are super easy and simple to use, but VR is expensive and requires expensive hardware to get the desired resolution/framerates all which go again the low cost, ease of use and simplicity the mainstream love. So the end result will be a super niche product that I think will fail to catch on with the core audience once the novelty wears off resulting in a product which is in effect D.O.A to the mainstream!

Sorry to be a debby downer on VR, don't get me wrong I'd love to try it cuz it seems like an awesome gimmick, and I'm sure it would be fun as hell to play in VR, but at the end the day 3D was also an awesome gimmick and it failed twice, VR is no different, it failed in the 80s and in my opinion its poised to fail again. The only tech I think that could solve the issues mentioned above would have to be holographic display technology. I also see AR like holo lense having more success though more for it's practicality like real life hud of your vitals, but I think that would end up being more like mobile phones as in it'll server another function but can also play games. anyways, that's my take on the matter.
