Forums - Sony Discussion - PS4 Might Never Have Backwards Compatibility, What Can Sony Do

That said, they will announce PS1/PS2 bc sometime this year... my guess is that's the next big firmware update.

They can't do PS1 BC, there is no CD rom in the PS4 (or so I hear, never tested it). It's be digital stuff only.

The bluray drive can read CDs. There has just been no media player and hence no need to code the firmware to handle it.

lol they won't do anything. They don't need to and even if they did, BC isnt going to win over many people.

It helps block people emigrating from XB1, while expanding the library for the opposite. You won't see tit-for-tat but they'll do partial bc.

Huh Sony wont ever do BC for PS4, they may one day do PS1 and 2 BC, for al the games they have on the store already, but there will never ever be PS3 BC, other than PS Now, which is not BC.

I will just show my anecdotal experience...

I bought a lot of PS3 games in 2013 but after got my PS4 I never touched the PS3 again... I have a huge backlog with saves on middle and it didn't bother me.

I can't play PS3 anymore... I don't have time.

Same for me, and eventually if wanted play again ps3, i would just buy a other one if mine die ! retro is cool at start but after 2 years its just usless in my eye.

Actually, now that I'm looking at this topic again, I seem to recall a really odd bit in the PS4 owners manual about Backwards Compatibility - mostly saying PS1-3 games will not work in the system, but that a few PS1 games will. (Didn't even list which ones, I'm guessing Cerny made Crash games play on it.) I'm not at home to check it personally, but that would lend credence to the idea of at least PS1 emulation being possible. I still think it's a waste of time, but if Sony can devote some people to it, whatever.

Edit: Actually, I think this selective BC note was in the Super Slim PS3 user manual, not the PS4. Never mind.

Would be nice but it's not going to kill me. lol

I honestly don't even expect them to let you play your existing games through PSNow, TBH. Running that can't be cheap, and if everyone just uses games they already have than they probably won't make enough to justify the costs.

Sony won't make this a big priority.

Have some time to kill? Read my shitty games blog. http://www.pixlbit.com/blogs/586/gigantor21

:D

Sony needs to add a 360 emulator of their own so the 40% of owners that jumped ship from 360 to PS4 can have backwards compatibility for their old games. Since PS4 has super powers that Xbone doesn't, 360 emulation will be better on PS4.

Xbone... the new "N" word   Apparently I troll MS now | Evidence | Evidence

As salty as you were sounding -- thats probably true.

But really -- I'd be down with it as long as MS puts PS Now on the XB1.

Look at all the downplaying.

It is indeed sad especially if you see the sales of PS3 galmes like GTA/Last of us on PS4 and people cheering about the Uncharted Collection. Almost every PS3 owner I know bought a PS one game on it. the interest is certainly their.

You WILL see ps1/ps2 BC on PS4 - Just not PS3. You will most likely see it arrive around August-November imo.
