Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sega licences the Unreal Engine 3

The Unreal 3 Engine is a great engine. This was made evident when SquareEnix decided to use it. Square makes their own engines, and I can imagine it costs more to make an engine than it does to license one. Regardless, Epic is rolling in dough. DS = It Prints Money! U3 Engine = It Prints Money!

The "Engine" itself isn't that expensive ... The expensive part is the tools required to produce content for the engine

The Doom/Unreal/Source engines all come with tools to aid in level building, and all major 3D modeling companies will produce (or support) plugins for the file formats that these engines use. If you produce your own engine you also have to produce your own tools and plugins to get content into the engine.

Around the Network

There are loads of cheap 3D game engines about too - Game Studio and the like. I quite fancy having a go at creating something simple (just being able to walk around an environment I created myself would be a huge buzz) in one of those. If you can model in 3D Max then it's not as difficult as you might first suspect (so I'm told).

i own a wii and im sure that the wii cant do the unreal engine 3...so is this mainly good news for PS3 and 360 games? or is it still being used for wii but scaled down quite a bit? either way id still like to see it used on the wii if it is possible

At this point, anything that uses UE3 is being assumed to not be for Wii. According to Epic, it is possible to get the engine on Wii, most likely in a scaled down format, but it's not something they're particularly concerned about. Maybe in a couple years.

I don't think anyone on the Wii would want a game using a scaled down UE3 engine anyways, it would likely result in games that have the same problem as Spider-Man has, the graphics scaled down so much as to make the game look hideous.  It's probably better just to start from scratch on the system to get as much power out of it as possible.
