Forums - Politics Discussion - Your View On Making Remarks Using Gender Stereotypes.

What I want to know from you guys during this thread is what is your stance on comments which make the use of gender stereotypes. Here are two examples of what I mean so that it is more clear:

Example 1:

Girl gets angry at something insignificant. Someone replies "Well someone's on their period" therefore making the gender stereotype that all woman are unbalanced during their period.

Example 2:

A man is carrying out a task commonly done by females. Someone remarks "Man up" therefore making use of the gender stereotype that all man should partake in manly tasks.

Now seeing these two examples and using some others which you know, I want to know what is your stance on such remarks. Should they be allowed? Are they insulting to the person and gender at which they were aimed at? And so on..

Disclaimer: This thread is not about which gender has more stereotypes or which has a harder time but rather whether comments such as these on a whole should be allowed and how people feel about them no matter to which gender they are being aimed at.

I have the same response that I have with all issues like this. It depends on your relationship with the person involved. If you and said person have established that it's okay to make remarks like that with each other, and both are comfortable making remarks like that with each other, it's absolutely fine.

If you're not sure how they will react, you probably don't know the person well enough to even be considering.

I welcome the use of these phrases anywhere because females and males are different and those differences should be celebrated. However, I don't consciously use them unless the other person makes it obvious that they would be offended by them.

Why? Because people are just pussies sometimes and I want them to man up.

I disagree with that idea, because these kinds of comments are not about differences in males and females.  It's about the roles that were given to them, and therefore restricts the freedom for a male or female to feel comfortable outside of the society-given roles.

Yeah but putting personal feelings is it socially acceptable for people toake such comments, in today's society?

This all relies on people's understanding of the world.

If someone is using these kinds of generalizations out of place, or without being tongue-in-cheek, they just look inexperienced and unknowledgeable.

This is a problem for that person moreso than the people they're talking to.

Should they be allowed? Of course. Are they in good taste? probably not.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

"Should they be allowed?"

Who's going to stop them? Are we going to have PC police, actively beating down doors of people who make comments/jokes etc.. that others disapprove of? No, we won't. The answer is, you don't have to like them, but there's not a thing you can do about it. Even IF people didn't have the right to speak their minds, they'd still do it. Because you cannot stop free thought, free speech. Actual pioneers in the movement, sacrificed far more than most of us will ever be required to sacrifice, in order to support all of our ability to speak freely. It will never be something a single person or entity can police.

You may not like what someone else said, but just because you don't like it, doesn't mean you have the right, the authority, or the power to stop it.

if you think women are just getting angry about meaninglessthings when on their periode, well than you dont know many women.
