Well their is a history of people upgrading their consoles every few years.

Playstation-1995, PSOne-2000

PS2-2000, PS2 Slim-2004

PS3-2006, Slim-2009, Super Slim-2012

Xbox 360-2005, Xbox 360S-2010

The difference is that in this situation the new selling point wouldn't be the device being smaller/sleeker but that it has better performance.

Those different models didn't offer improved resolution, they just offered more memory. (And were around the same price, maybe $50 more.)

I know those redesigns didn't improve resolution/performance, I even said that in the last reply lol I'm just saying people have shown to have no problem with upgrading their console mid-gen if they see it worthwhile. And we see that people have no problem with handhelds doing it based on New 3DS success thus far (basically replace super-stable 3D with higher resolution).

So let's say the first generation of NX devices releases in or around 2017, Gen 2 around 2020 and Gen 3 around 2023

NX Portable Gen 1-540p, Gen 2-720p, Gen 3-1080p

NX Tablet Gen 1-720p, Gen 2-1080p, Gen 3-1440p

NX Console Gen 1-1080p, Gen 2-1080p but higher graphic settings, Gen 3-4k resolution

All or 99% of games released during Gen 2 are still playable on Gen 1, all or 99% of games released during Gen 3 are still playable on Gen 2, giving each Gen a 6 year cycle.

Its not infomation, its a hypothetical question ;)

But not one that can be realized.

I'm not sure you know how hypothetical questions work :/

In the event that Nintendo's next platform had a lot of third party support (the hypothetical situation) would he (the_dengle) feel ok about paying $400? (the question).

Oh, I know how it works.

But releasing another console at $300+ (due to graphical and performance improvements) will just piss people off. Will $300 for a console be worth it if in 3 years you got to spend another $300 on it?

I just hope Nintendo finally supports a console for more then 3 years, they need to be more aggressive and throw some of that cash around for some exclusives.

Who said anything about $300+ consoles? I just said a few reply back, I think these devices would launch at $250, then they would probably receive $50 price cuts 1.5-2 years after launch.

NX Portable/Console-2017, $249.99 each

2018 or 2019, price cut to $199.99

NX Portable/Console Gen 2-2020, $199.99, Gen 1-phased out

Why would people be pissed? I already said Gen 1 devices would still be fully supported, nobody is forced to go out and buy the upgrade to play games with higher resolution/better performance, just like nobody was forced to upgrade their launch PS3 to the Slim model 3 years later.

would you feel more comfortable pay $400 for NX if it had as much third party support as the playstation4?

No. I don't play very many games. The only console I've been playing for the past two to three years is my 3DS, and due to time and budget contraints I haven't even played all of the games I want to play on that. Every year several games release that I want to try but I never get around to it. If there were ten times as many games available to me it wouldn't make any difference, I would just be passing over ten times as many games.

For instance, if I owned a PS4 I would probably have ignored almost every game that came out in the past six months and just played Bloodborne. Later this year maybe I'd pick up The Witcher, Arkham Knight, Battlefront, a half-dozen or so indies. Roughly the same number of games I'd buy if I had a Wii U, just different games.

Like they always do?

$100 a year until it's paid off? How much do you think it should cost?

I do think Nintendo should go back to making conventional consoles, but it shouldn't be overly powerful or expensive. Basically, it should be a modern-day SNES: Powerful enough to match the PS5 (or at least as much power as you squeeze into it and sell it at a $400 launch price and still have it break even), with a conventional gamepad, a sufficiently large hard drive, a more robust online service, and a standard Blu-ray-based format for retail-release games. Third-party support would be stronger, thus providing a more reliable avenue for stronger hardware sales than a gimmick controller, which like the Wii U gamepad may not "click" with gamers the way the Wii Remote did. If Nintendo tries going the Wii route again by making an underpowered but "innovative" system that relies on a gimmick and a lower price, it could blow up in their face again and we'll be looking at another Nintendo console with sub-25 million lifetime sales.

How do we know a powerful $400, multimedia box from Nintendo will sell more than 25 million? Playstation brand has Europe+Others on lock down, the only way somebody is taking that from them is if Sony makes massive mistakes. Same goes for America, Playstation+Xbox brands are very strong, people aren't just going to switch without an incentive to. Japan really isn't huge into home consoles these days.

Basically Playstation+Xbox own the market for powerful, multimedia consoles with a huge focus on AAA western games. Do people really want or need a 3rd 90% identical device? In order for Nintendo to find large success with such a strategy, one or both of the competitors needs to mess up and relying on somebody else to mess up in order for u to succeed is not a very sound strategy.
