Forums - Nintendo Discussion - What If There Are More Than 2 NX Hardware Variants?

I think were going to see one device, and it will be something in between the Wii U Controller and the Gameboy.

Nope, Iwata has pretty much ruled that out, even saying that the number of "form factors" may increase. Many recent quotes from Iwata and even Miyamoto suggest that we're going to see multiple devices that share things like a common architecture, operating system, online infrastructure, account system, membership program, and software library.

Around the Network

XB1 runs 3 operating systems if i'm not mistaken.

What if NX did run Android and you could access the Play Store? NX becomes a Android console... assuming certain conditions are met (touch screen is a must).
No need to port Indie games for NX if they are or will be on the Android market.

The increase in number of titles would be huge and something that Sony and MS wouldn't be able to replicate without following Nintendo's footsteps. Which they won't!

While that wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea, it's not very realistic, I can't imagine Nintendo doing such a thing.

I know it's not very likely, but... with what happened this generation, hadn't it been for Indies and things would have been even worse.

With Unity and Webframework; having almost no barriers to Indie development, that idea doesn't seem that unlikely today.
Having the Android OS running on the next handheld, for example, would allow Nintendo to better fight mobile gaming. You'd have the best of two worlds: your usual games + Android games.
No other device would be able to do such a thing.

The same goes for the home console.
