Can't they at least give a shot to a 1060p 60fps classic turn-based RPG? Sure we have almost the most recent classic-based turn-based RPG Lost Odyssey, but why aren't we getting more of that epicness?
Lost Odyssey still remains the modern/classic turn-based RPG, and the fact that we're not getting anything like it is really, really disappointing in the video game industry when devs are trying to hard to "revamp" and creating new ways of gameplay.

Why should I do research? If they make the game look crap in the demo then that is their fault, not mine. |
Considering the universal praise the demo is getting, I'd say it's more your close-mindedness' fault than theirs.

Yeah, wouldn't it be great if everything was realistic. Then it'd be almost the same as reality.......
....which we already have. And is fairly shit.

Lost Odyssey is godly. But sadly, good turn-based games like that cost a lot but don't sell much.
Final Fantasy games cost more and more to make. Square just wants to sell more and more in turn. So they try new, different things to entice newcomers and make the series more popular. If they lose some bitter long time fans in the process of making the appeal broader for the rest of the gamers out there, those who may never have been into the series because of the archaic turn-based gameplay, then there's no harm really done.
shikamaru317 said: It's not like Square Enix has said there won't be any more turn-based Final Fantasy games ever. If Hiroyuki Ito is indeed directing 16 as is rumored, don't you think it'll be turn based, considering the fact that all 3 of the previous FF games he directed were turn based? I'm guessing that Square didn't have a turn based game in development that was far enough along to be released in the near future, so they decided to turn Versus 13 into 15. |
I understand that but it's also kind sad. At one point we had 7 - 10 out in like 4 years of each other. 13 was 5 years ago. To me I feel it is the other way round that they had all this work done and just wanted to to get it out, yet the new director is still saying it's 60% done. 10 years development and 60%? If they don't have another game ready after 13 part 3, what on earth are they working on? 14 was out so they must have had another game ready to be called 15, which is now 16?
Ah, well, whatever happens we won't get any of these games until a long time off, even 15 is a way off, Demo or not.
Hmm, pie.

I think in the case of Lost Odyssey that has much more to do with it being an Xbox exclusive than it being turn based... |
Probably. Which makes it all the more a shame that they aren't porting the damn thing to the PC.
I thought we knew this since the first gameplay trailer was released years ago. Were people actually expecting a turn based game after years of knowing that this game was going to have a battle system somehow similar to the kingdom Hearts series?

An unknown force of evil has swept across the land, plunging it into civil war and terrorizing the populace. A mad king, his missing son, and a mysterious archbishop are all pieces to the puzzle that faces you. You have journeyed to the source of the evil. The town of Tristram, now inhabited by only a handful of survivors. The cathedral there is built over the ruins of an ancient monastery, and now eerie lights and sounds are heard echoing through its abandoned halls. |

Blizzard themselves classified Diablo as an action RPG, not as a hack and slash, as VXIII posted above me. Action RPG's evolved as a hybrid starting in about 1984 with Nihon Falcom's Dragon Slayer, not sure why some gamers still have difficulty recognizing it as it's own genre when it has a 30+ year history. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Action_role-playing_game BTW, nice username, avatar, and sig, always nice to meet a fellow browncoat. No power in the 'verse can stop us! |
It was a great show, and I'm sad it was canceled. On topic, I know Blizzard says it isn't a hack and slash game, but a ton of people agree that it is.
I did a quick Google search, and those were the links I found on page one. I'm not saying they're right or wrong. I am saying that if I make a new tetris game and I call it a First Person Shooter that doesn't necessarily make it a First Person Shooter. I personally feel like games can belong to more than one category. So you could call it a Hack and Slash, Action RPG. At least in my book.
