Actually I'd hate to be you when you're in a wreck cause you skidded or you're stuck in 6 hour traffic in the snow while I safely get home. Cycling in the rain is no biggie (I live in SoCal so never been in the snow).

Around the Network

I'm not that suicidal. I'll ride a bike around the neighborhood or in safe areas designed for biking.

I'm a cyclist myself (I don't have a car, and get to work usually on public transport, but am planning to cycle in the summer) but if you live in Southern California then sure cycling is awesome all year round. It's usually sunny or maybe least mild overcast, and when it rains it is nearly always warm rain. Here in the UK for about 1/3rd the year if it rains it's not much above 0 degrees (celcius, not sure what that is in farenheit... whatever temperature water freezes at) 6 hour traffic is also an issue for cyclists here as in many places the roads don't allow you to undertake without jumping onto the path (which is strictly speaking illegal).

cycling is great, but it's not always a convenient solution, especially for getting to work... here is why I haven't cycled to work yet despite it only being a 25 minute ride:
1. Weather - it has mostly been Winter in my current job so it's cold and/or wet.
2. Winter - it's dark in the morning and at night, which is pretty scary when trucks are passing you by only 6 inches.
3. Roads - UK roads are horrible for cyclists, very narrow and more recently full of potholes (some big enough to tip you over the handlebars if you don't see them, for example if it's raining and they look like a standard puddle)
4. Work attire - at work I am in trousers and a shirt, not good for cycling in anything other than cool dry weather, there is no where for me to change at work (and if there was that adds another 5 minutes at least to my trip to work)
5. Storage - no where for me to put my bike at work, so I would either have to chain it to a lamppost (which may be illegal, but not sure on that) and risk it getting stolen or chain it in town which is 10 minutes walk from work.

I am lucky in that almost 1/2 of my route to work can be completed on a no-traffic cycle route (although a section of that runs between a garbage tip & a canal, which during summer months adds a fly-swarm problem) but not everyones work route will have that.
