Forums - PC Discussion - Advice on builing a PC for a specific type of games?

Hi,

I want to buy a new somewhat powerful computer, because my old one is just too slow these days.

Basically the only games I play on my PC are old games and turn-based strategy games. Got a PS4 for everything else.

I've spent countless hours on Football Manager, a game which needs to calculate a huge amount of stuff bethween turns and it takes forever. Other games include Civilization, Heroes of Might and Magic or XCOM - all turn-based strategies.

I think it would make sense to supercharge ceratain HW parts while saving money on others for this type of games. Is it possible? Which HW parts should I drop? Any other advice?

Edit: My spending budget would be around 1,000 USD.

Whats your spending budget? and with civilisation, are you referring to the latest ones or the old version.

I added the budget to the original post, it would be around $1.000. I meant CIV 5 and Beyond Earth. I didn't think naming the older games would be relevant.

Please post your current rig. Depending on your MB, this could be a quite cheap endeavor.

My current rig is 7 years old. I think a brand new one is in order.

1680x1050... but I plan to upgrade in this department soon, too.

With a $1000 you can build one hell of a machine.
$600 on CPU/GPU
$120 on MOBO
$80 on Ram
$80 on Case
$70 on HDD
$20 on CD drive

But if I were you I'd maybe get a cheaper CPU or GPU and spend $120 on a 250GB SSD.

Or spend less on a GPU and get something like the GTX 960 that just came out and spend extra on the MOBO.  Then in a year or two you can get another GTX 960 and run in SLI.

All of those games are pretty easy to run.  You wouldn't even need to spend $600 to max them out.

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

To what resolution ?

You thinking about 1440p ?

If so then an R9 280X with an i5 4690K will do just fine for Civ: BE ...
