It's never the case, of course they aren't all like that, but let's just say there is an awful lot of them.
Personally, I never really got into Smash Bros. (never own a N64, GC or Wii) before the 3DS version, and now I'm slowly getting in the "Smash community", and I see/meet people like this all the time, wether it's in tournaments or forums.
It's just plain annoying.
But well, as you said, not all of the Melee fans are like that, and that's a good thing, but man there are a lot of hardcore fanboys...

But as it is said in the comments of the article in my first comment, the Smash community is still young. The vast majority of players are teenagers and young adults. And we all know how they can be at times (me included, even though I hope I'm not an ass to other people about their tastes)
