Forums - Sales Discussion - Japan's Best Sellers: Kirby and the January Curse Edition

Week 1, 2015 (Dec 29 - Jan 04) Couldn't Find it, sorry.

Week 2, 2015 (Jan 05 - Jan 11)

Week 3, 2015 (Jan 12 - Jan 18)

Week 4, 2015 (Jan 19 - Jan 25)

Week 5, 2015 (Jan 26 - Feb 01)

Hey everyone, I think it'd be a good idea to have a nicer historical archive of sales in Japan, the weekly Famitsu/MC threads weren't cutting it, so for the sake of having as much information in just one place I believe is a good idea to have one thread every month with the most important information. What do you think?

That up there, as the title says, is a table with the 15 best selling games for the month of January, bolded means the game released on said month, all software information is from Famitsu as its all software sales form all threads I make, I prefer Famitsu for software and they're the ones who have the oldest data, so to keep consistent with my other threads, software is from Famitsu.

Of course software is not all that matters, we also have hardware charts right below, that data is from Media Create, they're usually better at hardware tracking and give a more detailed breakdown (i.e. data of the New3DS, PSVTV, etc. without combining it).

Software is from Famitsu, Hardware is from MC.

This is what the pie looked in Japan in January.

Major releases for February, might be incomplete, helping finishing it would be nice.

Dat 3DS domination...

Btw, I'm so happy with Mario Kart 8's performance! The game has some seriously beautiful legs!

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Animal Crossing is way more impressive, that one came out over 2 years ago.

It is impressive indeed, but that's a different story since the install base of the 3DS is 9x bigger than the Wii U there.

I hope Kirby sells a lot and I really can't wait for that game

Kirby is doing fine ^^

Its somewhat sad to see the lack of Vita on the software chart.

At least it might even be able to take #1 for February :D

It's the lowest debut for a Kirby game since a puzzle spinoff on the Gameboy 18 years ago.  By a pretty wide margin too.  The next lowest debut since then was more than double, and showed much better legs in its second week.

But this is a strange Kirby, the sequel of one of the lowest selling Kirbys ever (and of the bigest critical success on the saga), Canvas Curse , in the worst selling Nintendo console ever... I think it´s pretty good for a low budget game like this, has been 3º on japan fw, and on its second week is still on the top 10 selling games (and probably on the third too) With only 9 days has sell +45k and is the 11º best selling game of january, is pretty good, i was worried because i thought it might be a BOMBA but is not, and on his first week outsold Fatal Frame V and Captain Toad fw, and we know that Captain Toad is doing very fine there.

Canvas Curse sold around 150% better in its first two weeks on an install base even smaller than the Wii U's.  This isn't a favorable comparison for Rainbow Curse.  It has also had 11 days on sale over the first two weeks of tracking.  I don't know what it is about Nintendo software where people constantly get the number of days wrong.

Captain Toad sold better in week 2, and Kirby has little to no chance of keeping up with its holiday performance.  I don't even know why you'd compare it to Fatal Frame.  The last Kirby game on consoles sold about double the entire Fatal Frame series in Japan.  Speaking of Fatal Frame, VGC seems to have the Wii port of 2 massively overtracked.  Media Create has it at around 47k in 2012 and 3k in 2013.  VGC has it at 74k in 2012, and 22k in 2013.

So 45k isn't just not a bomb, but it is "pretty good"?  If that is pretty good how bad would it need to sell to be a bomb?  Devil Survivor 2 sold more with just 4 days on sale.  That's a series that has historically been much smaller than Kirby.  Far Cry 4 sold more than Kirby in 4 days as well.  Again, historically much smaller than Kirby.  The PS4 version alone did more than Kirby's first week, and that is on an install base half the size.
