You really should play 2 and 3.  the variation in gameplay is huge in those games.

so many platform games from that time that I enjoy...

I think it's more likely what he was taking about in the OP.

He asked whether we just liked Crash because of nostalgia and that's what we played when we were young. It seems evident that the OP played DKC back in the day and not Crash and that's why he keeps comparing the two and calling crash a "carbon-copy" or a ripoff of DKC and he prefers DKR to CTR etc. So perhaps the reason he's pushing DKC and talking bad about Crash is Nostalgia too.

yeah, i feel like just to prove i'm not anti-sony, i should say APE ESCAPE is one of my favorite games ever. that is one of the most inventive games, mechanically, with the use of analog/3d control, of the last 20 years. up there with katamari damacy in the sheer joy of playing it. and utterly original (like katamari).

i said in my op that the character design in dkc was horrendous, and that crash's character design is bad because it's so closely based on that. i also said later in the thread that there are huge control problems with momentum, etc., in the dkc games that are made worse in the crash games.

let me say unequivocally: i am not a fan of donkey kong country. but what i'm saying is that naughty dog clearly were huge fans. big enough fans, anyway, that they took stuff from it with relish. they even took the naming convention for the characters from dkc...

donkey/diddy/dixie/cranky KONG --> crash/coco BANDICOOT.

also, as i said:

crash bash (2000) = mario party (1998)

crash team racing (1999) = mario kart (1996) + diddy kong racing (1997)

crash tag team racing (2005) [not naughty dog, but still] = mario kart double dash (2003)

it's like they're incapable of original ideas, so they settled for cut-and-paste game design.

You do realize that Genres are all created by one game to begin with right?

So since Mario Kart came out we're not allowed anymore kart racers?

Also Tag Team Racing is completely different to double dash. One it has a platforming overworld, secondly you don't have two people on karts all the time, karts that are near each other have the option to fuse together to form a new vehicle with two people on it, person on the back with a turret. If that's not an original idea I don't know what is.

Just because it's a kart racer and you can have two people on the same vehicle at a certain point in the game doesn't mean it's a cut-and-paste game design, the tracks are completely different, the entire feel of the game is completely different. (Tag Team is also an awful game and I thought this thread was about the naughty dog games.)

Crash Bash is a minigame collection, so since mario party exists we're not allowed any minigames? There are no boards, all the minigame types are completely different to Mario Party, it has Boss Battles. Again its a COMPLETELY different game .

Crash Team Racing does seem like some mix between MK64 and DKR but again it's a kart racing game, of course it does and more importantly they created an incredible game in an already existing genre, sorry if not every game is completely fresh and genre defining. Mario Kart was genre defining, you know what that term means right? It means that all games in that genre then take inspiration from that particular game, that's not a bad thing.

Crash 2 and 3 are very different to any other platforming game, but  "they're incapable of original ideas".

The idea of locking out a genre or not allowing developers to be inspired by previous games is LUDICROUS. I just don't understand how you think making more games in a proven popular genre is a bad thing and if you think that these game were "cut and paste game design" you really don't have a very good understanding of game development.
