Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft's New YouTube Policy - A Step Backwards

Its shocking to see that MS a US company tells gamers to only upload their game footage only on youtube and twitch, you know websites owned by americans what a coincedence.
I wont support their protectionism policies in anyway anymore, is it just gives me more reasons not to buy their games and consoles.

I'd say they have good relations with those   2 sites. Google and twitch probably agreed to give them a slice of the pie.

This is not want we meant by taking cues from Nintendo!

Lets Plays do more marketing for videogames than any TV ads. Microsoft should be paying THEM to advertise their content, not the other way around!

~~~~ Mario Kart 8 drove far past my expectations! Never again will I doubt the wheels of a Monster Franchise! :0 ~~~~
Any youtube thing is weird. It's all very middle ground and not quite one way or the other. No matter how much you argue that it's free advertising or anything else, doesn't mean it's not hurting a developer if people prefer to watch a game being played so they don't have to buy it. Yet, the 'free' advertising does work, I bought BL2 based on youtube videos (I bought it used so a bit of a waste in reality but still :P).
There is an issue with this though, it's the 'free' part. People are making money from other people's work. No one would stand for a youtube video where someone read out a book they bought chapter by chapter and had adverts on with no money going back to the writer. Would people argue 'But they've bought the book, what is the problem?'. The problem is this person is making money from someone else's work not their own.
All Nintendo did was ask people not to put adverts on their videos, right? Yet people took this and no videos at all. Not sure if this has changed since but this is a great policy. That PewDiePie or whatever his name is is currently making millions a year now on his videos. I wonder if any of the developers of the games he plays makes nearly as much, I'm not talking about the big company like MS, just the 1 or 2 developers who wrote their indie game.
Hmm, pie.
Wow, he certainly picked the right name for his YouTube channel. Maybe if he calmed down and read things more carefully he'd see most of what he is about to pop a blood vessel over is actually incorrect.
Also, I gotta laugh at the line you threw in about Microsoft being in a "distant second place" and needing to "do everything in their power to turn things around". So you're telling us you believe YouTuber's seeing a video titled "Fanmade Halo: Covenant Strike" instead of just "Halo: Covenant Strike" is going to sell them less consoles? You're reaching.
what is so funny? I've stated fact and it's relevant to this situation. They should be going out of their way to win people back not create more negativity. Many YouTubers will see this change and they will just avoid Halo. I deal with a lot of these YouTubers as part of my joband it's not gone down well. This guy may seem like he's over reacting but he used to be big in the Halo 3 community back in the day so trust me he understands exactly the damage this will do. He's pro MS more than he is Sony so you can't say he's got a chip on his shoulder.
I've got the feeling you will reply saying you laugh because I've made a few negative MS threads lately. Which I have and I'm trying to think of a few SOny threads to make next to even things out. But in the meantime enjoy my game breaking GTA 5 glitch thread and soon to be created Far Cry 4 glitch thread which is in the works. Plenty of hate and love for everyone :)
It is a fact that the Xbox One is trailing the PS4. However, this discussion is irrelevant of that. Again, unless you're trying to tell us that more open YouTube policies is something that would help fix the Xbox One's sales battle with PS4? Please, go into some detail on how this will actually affect console sales and what MS could do differently. Would allowing people to name their YouTube videos differently result in 2, 5, 10 million more Xbone sales? Just curious. I laughed because the connection makes no sense. This isn't going to change Xbone sales at all. People can still upload YT footage of games, they just have to name them differently.
Idk anything about your various other negative MS threads lately but I'll be sure to not go and look for them.
This is my line of work and it 100% is relevant. Youtube has already greatly helped the xbox one. Most big gta and cod youtubers stuck with the xbox one.  That was huge free advertising for Microsoft.  Millions of people look up to these guys. You can keep laughing at facts all you want.
And halo has died a death on the youtube scene. News like this is putting off big youtubers even thinking of covering the game.
@poster above
Many publishers actually pay a lot of youtubers to cover their games. So some of them are smart enough about the situation.
My edit was too late, it seems. But by your logic you're pretty damn close to saying people must pay car manufacturers if they record a video while driving.
If they make money off the fact the car is the attraction of the video, then damn hell the car manufacture would deserve the money. Naturally, the car manufacture probably wouldn't ask for it, but if they make money on ads, then they have the right to do so.
If the car features for a few seconds in a video that makes money, it's fair usage on the video makers end, so their's no right there.
Edit : And also you have to consider whether you paid for the car. A car costs 5 grand to make, you pay 10 grand, you own the car and the right to use it.
A game cost 20 million to make, you pay $40, you own the license.
Content -> music, tv, video, games is licensed
Cars have development costs too, you know. Either way, we seem to have a fundamental difference in the ways we think, and this discussion will not bear any fruit should we continue it further. Have fun on your slippery slope!
Someone should put together a list of every Xbox One scandal since the reveal up until now. I bet there is quite a few.
Microsoft went to youtube, asked to be included in the split, youtube agreed, thats enough for them.
google take 45% of the revenue off the bat. SO they have plenty of room for sharing some of that.
Actually they take 65%. I'm a YT partner.
