Forums - PC Discussion - Brand New Laptop Keyboard Is Causing Weird Issues! Help!

Okay so I got a brand new laptop keyboard for my Dell because my little brother spilled lemonade on my laptop and I had to open it up and clean it all.

Well the keyboard was the only part that stopped working (Thank you baby Jesus) so I decided to just buy a new one and have it replaced.

I installed the new keyboard (It's the exact same one I used to have) but then I started noticing some weird issues such as:

I would have to manually select the hard drive as the boot up option thing. For some reason it was giving me a weird error and I had to restart the laptop and go to boot options, then select boot from HDD.

The mouse was having some weird issues where if I would click on a file, it would highlight every single file that came before it, which would open up every single file before it. Also when I clicked on links using chrome, it would open up the link in a brand new window instead of just going to that link while staying in the same window (Example I would google "NBA.com" and when I would click the nba website it would open a brand new window (NOT TAB) instead of just going to nba.com while staying on the same window. It did this for every single link! Super annoying...

So I plugged out the keyboard from the motherboard just to test it out, and when I tried the laptop everything worked just as it did before. It booted up normally, the mouse was perfectly fine and when I would click on a link it would work just as it used to. Also I'm 100% sure it wasn't opening links in a new window because of google chrome, I made sure to turn that setting off. I turned it off and it did the same thing, I turned it on and same shit...

Sorry for the long post, but do you guys think the keyboard is defective or something? I contacted the seller but just thought I would post it here in case any of you know what's going wrong with it.

THANKS

So, I am a little confused on the second to last paragraph where you say:

"So I plugged out the keyboard from the motherboard just to test it out, and when I tried the laptop everything worked just as it did before. So, you took off your new keyboard from the motherboard and you tested the laptop without your new keyboard and everything worked fine? Or did you put your new keyboard in some other laptop and then it started working?

I just plugged out the keyboard from the laptop and used the laptop with no keyboard. I didn't need the keyboard for it to turn on and use it.

Hmm, interesting! It sounds to me that some lemonade may have gotten into the port where you plug in your keyboard so see if there is like any residue left on that and clean it if you can. If the keyboard is competely new and clean and its the same one, then it shouldn't be the issue but rather the port that the data cable plugs into.

Also, which model is your laptop so we can help you better

Dell XPS 15 521X. I will see the port and clean it.

And this is the keyboard I bought - http://www.ebay.com/itm/121492638754?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I cleaned the port with a little bit of alcohol and let it dry off. How am I now supposed to know if the problem is with the keyboard or the port? I don't have another keyboard to test it out with...

Did the new keyboard flash update your bios?  I was recently looking up on replacing a battery on an old Vaio laptop and read about how some replacement batteries from China flash updated the bios because Sony made it so only official Sony batteries would work and to get around this the unofficial batteries would update the bios when plugged in.

I don't know how much truth there is to this or if I remember the details properly because I'm just going off what I read, but it might be worth asking a Dell technician if they have any ideas.  Some of the boot problems you describe may point to an bios issue though.

edit-

Is this your model laptop shown in this keyboard replacement video here. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObwzxYQqI-g

It seems like quite the process to remove the keyboard, so if any of the connections were not put back properly that might also be causing the issues?

Well, in your case, you can't really but I guess if you have a spare usb keyboard, you can try plugging in that and see if it has an issue just to eliminate that  it is a wonky ass software issue or not but other than that, idk

Have you got any other USB devices to test out the port with?
