the fact that you didnt even notice this when you say the many gameplay vids of the game says a lot.

Idk, maybe I just never paid much from it. Thought it was some special feature to hightlight the more cinematic nature of the game. Again, this is the first real time I even thought about black bars in games. I never knew the Evil Within had them either. Plus I rarely go out of my way to look at gameplay vids online for any game as I like to be more surprised.

So excuse my ignorance on the matter. I'm sure I'm not the only person who didn't know about the black bars until now.

you dont get my point. the fact that you didnt notice them until you were told means they didnt bother you that much when you say the gameplay.

You didn't realize that removing the bars above and below wouldn't take away any of the horizontal view and just increase the vertical view?

Of course black bars don't give you a wider FOV. Pulling the camera back does. I'm surprised you found this to be a revelation XD

I did not realize this :( i thought it all had to do with aspect ratios and pulling the camera back would just make it further away without adding horizontal or vertical pixels

Field of vision is about the size of the angle you can see of the world. In the real world humans can see about 200 degrees, though only about 120 degrees with both eyes at once.
In a video game for example if the FOV was 90 degrees, you could turn the character 90 degrees clockwise and see an entirely new section of the world... whereas if the FOV was 120 degrees some of what you saw on the right of the screen would be visible on the left if you turned 90 degrees clockwise.

The higher the FOV the more of the game world you can see on screen (though a balance has to be maintained as too high can make it look distorted, especially with consoles where normally people normally sit with less of the screen in their real-life FOV... although this is becoming less common as more people are buying big TVs)

What would be ideal is if you fit your screen into your own binocular FOV (sit at the correct distance so that the edges of the screen are only just visible with both eyes at once) then set the games FOV to 120 degrees.

The black bars is one of the few reason why I'm no interested in The order 1886... Black bars if ok in movies but in video games they create some sort of claustrophobic feeling

Wait does increasing the FOV hinder performance even if both examples are the same? like if both are fullscreen but 1 has smaller FOV, the other larger (no bars on both)

yes ofcourse,

a higher field of view means more of the scene is visible on screen and has to be calculated/drawn - many of the calculations for objects etc not on screen are discarded to focus the processing power where it's needed the most

Black bars were invented in video games to let the player know that he is not controlling anything.

Then they found out that fewer pixels means better graphics.

Its only logical that an underpowered console like the PS4 will use that while the player is in control and they found a way to brainwash gamers...

I stopped noticing the bars after 10 minutes of playing the evil within. Was a cool and difficult game.

From what I've seen of this "game" black bars will be the least of it's worries

If this game was 1.78:1, I bet it would be zoomed in more than these "modded" pictures. A bit more picture information on top and bottom, and losses on the sides.

Yep.

Whatever I watch a lot of movies with black bars. I'm sure I'll enjoy shooting my way through this awesome alternate reality 1886
