Forums - Politics Discussion - Do you think the FDA has too much power?

I'm interested. What are some powers the FDA doesn't have that you guys think it should have in order to make it more efficient? Honestly, it seems to have as much power as it possibly can have at this point. But please go on.

Manpower ? Cause a bigger workforce can probably achieve more ...

So the FDA needs a larger budget then? Or do you think there is some other reason why manpower is constrained. What type of workers does the FDA need to help improve its efficiency (rather than supplementing a bureaucracy?) Usually when we talk about power we mean legal power, but you bring up an interesting point with budgetary power.

I think the days of radium and other potentially missleading medical miracle pills are gone.

We are struggling to deal with cancer, autism, aids, ebola, and anything else you can think of.

In fact, I believe the rest of the word has less strict guidelines on most medical related issues and it shows. America is behnd...

What are your thoughts on FDA?

as someone who worked for a r&d company(i took care of rats and helped killing and cutting em), yes regulation is a pain in the ass, but it is needed.  i worked there 2 years while in college, and we just tested 2 pills, one of those would have killed a lot of people if we just tested a bit and not all the things the they wanted us to test.

and we need more regulation, and the criminalisation of some tactics. its not okay if you tell cancer patients that they should take some fake pills because chemicals are evil.  Homeopathy is booming, the snakeoil salesman are winning...

and the lobbyst have to go. its not cool if you can buy regulations by bribing(donating) politicians.

Since when did the FDA need more legal power than mandating medical or supplemental products ?

Like any highly technical organization the FDA needs more scientists and their assistants ...

The FDA is fine as is. People can decide what to put into their own bodies. If you want to destroy your own kidneys then be my guest. I don't know when Americans decided they can't do anything for themselves, but it needs to stop, or we'll end up like Europe.

Well, only one person in the FDA regulates the entire water bottle industry, so yes.

Legal power as in power given to them from a legislature. That is what legal power means. Not legislative (as in law making) power. My question pertained to specifics. What does the FDA, according to your knowledge, need that they don't have now?

Not what I meant but whatever ...

You stated manpower is what the FDA can use. I askwed in which areas? The FDA is a massive organization that employs many different types of people. Which jobspace is creating this supposed bottleneck in manpower? (Implied by your response to my original question.) When I phrased the original question I was thinking of abilities, what special powers can congress give to the FDA that they don't already have, and which people think will benefit the world. However, I conceded to your response that having a greater budget/capable of hiring more people would benefit the FDA. I responded with another question which summed up to, "in which areas does the FDA need to employ more people?"

Do you have a source for that?
