At least Sony is trying. If Microsoft wanted to find an answer after numerous failures they would just moneyhat Tomb Raider. (Too Soon?)



So, once again, the same demo that's been shown and panned ad-nauseum, is yet again being panned? There's a shocker. I'm waiting to see a demo or a review that encompasses a bit more than a 15 minute span of the game that everyone has basically agreed, wasn't the best point of the game to demo. The ball's in R@D's court to change the perceptions around this game, whether they can or not (or whether the game is anything more than what we've already heard), remains to be seen.

The TPS genre was invented a little earlier than 2005.

Fade to Black from 1995; one of the first polygon graphic based, over the shoulder shooters for the PS1. 

The original Tomb Raider in 1996 is considered by many to be a TPS even though the game utilizes adventure/exploration and puzzle solving as a large part of the overall experience. But if Uncharted is a TPS, TR is by the same standards.

Syphon Filter 1999; moving towards a tactical, military themed TPS, still maintaining TR's auto aim mechanics.

Max Payne 2001 adds thumbstick aiming to the TPS genre.

SOCOM 2002; military tactical TPS.

 

Even the "pop and drop" play mechanics of Gears of War (Cliff B. was the first to use the phrase) weren't new to the genre, for those who define TPS games by this feature.  

WinBack 1999 was possibly the first TPS game to use a cover system. 

Metal Gear Solid 2 (2001) further developed the play mechanic. 

Kill Switch (2003) was the first TPS to make the cover system a primary part of the play mechanics, complete with a blindfire option. 

Gears of War (2006) was heavily influenced by Kill Switch and used Resident Evil 4's over the shoulder POV.

About the quote by the which the rant was started, I think people are nit picking, the meaning of this is obviously that gameplay has to be good/great, this is a game after all.. not that they're trying to make a movie and will use the PS4 controller buttons just to make sure you are paying attention.

Are the enemies actually respawning, like in CoD and Half Life 2?

Every other bit of "information" in this write up is pure BS, the guy is quoting Gears of War as the most amazing thing ever... I think he has to go re-play it, he's wearing rose tinted glasses, especially for the story bit, the game doesn't exactly do in subtelty or originality as far as the theme goes... however gameplay wise it was the most interesting cover based shooter when it was released.

Now, to anyone who has seen the Gamescon trailer released for the Order there should be no doubt about the impact the guns have, that some areas are more open or that the game has potential.

Story wise, we will have to wait and see how this is playing out, the characters seem interesting the inclusion of Tesla and the whole parallel universe thing is always a plus.

Give me one cover based TPS that has a better game mechanics than GOW.

He doesn't need to take off his rose glasses.You just have to go to Twitch and see which TPS game has a more robust community.

As for the story, I don't think you ever played/payed attention to Gears of War to compare it to other games. I could've appointed some books from Gears of War universe to you but it wouldn't matter.
